What are the cylinder shaped components on my exhaust?

I should know this, but I don't. I have a 1996 Z28 with the LT1. In between the headers and the main converter/Y-pipe, there is a 'can' shaped cylinder on what appears to be both sides (from each header). Does anyone know what they are? I thought they were both cats, but I read my car only has 2.

I'm wanting to know this since it appears an annoying rattling sound is coming from the 'can' on the drivers side. What this component is will help in troubleshooting. Thanks.

Nathan

Thanks for your quick response. I'm buying a mech's stethoscope tonight to narrow down that cat to make sure the noise is not adjacent to it. Thanks again.
