Whole new exhaust system for my 97 SS
When I bought the car, the CAT'S were cut out and replaced with flexible tubing and in the process they also cut the header pipes. So, if I am starting from scratch and will keep the similar setup. (Y pipe to dual exhaust) So would you go with short or long headers, ceramic, stainless or other? Any other recommendations? Current setup has plenty of power and actually a bit too loud at times. Not my first Z, but it is the first one that is just a toy.

Re: Whole new exhaust system for my 97 SS
I'm in the same boat I just brought a 97 SS m6 with completely rusted out exhaust including the Pacesetter coated long tubes. I ordered the ebay 1 3/4" stainless longtubes and Y pipe but I also have a complete 3" stainless true dual setup with Magnaflow mufflers for another 4th gen that I never installed so I'm going to install it on the new SS and never have to worry again because the stainless steel will never rust.

Re: Whole new exhaust system for my 97 SS
I have a 97 SS MM6. I had SLP shorts. Went to Pacesetter Lg-tubes. Long tubes much better. A lot of re-wire with the long tubes. Also did my own Y and a Mufflex 3 1/2" cat back. No cats yet. Maybe later. Used Stage 8 fasteners bolted to AFR 190 heads. They really work. Previously I had a lot f fasteners come loose on the SLP shorts. Happy modding. B.

Re: Whole new exhaust system for my 97 SS
Does anyone know of any fake cats that I can get over a 3" stainless steel ory. The cars cats were cut out when I purchased the car and got it inspected at one place no problem. I had put classic plates on the car to get around the emissions test. Put a new stainless works system on the car from the long tube headers all the way back. Now I took it in for inspection and they won't even look at it as soon as they see the car does not have cats. They are calling it a safety issue, but was told they would pass it if had something that look like a cat (visual inspection) . What a pain in the ***. I don't want to cut anything, just take a cat that would be hinged so you can slip it right on. Someone could make a fortune if they are not already available. If they are, who has them.

Why not just install dual high flow cats? They are not going to produce a noticeable loss of performance on a stock engine. I built an 800HP nitrous motor, flanged the header collectors and Y-pipe so I could run dual 3" CarSound cats on the street and pass tailpipe emissions, and drop them out and install Borla XR1 mufflers when I went to the track and used leaded fuel.
