50 miles on boost - Thought I would share some info

No videos,, Ill hunt down a camera eventually.

4.030 SRP -24cc pistons
5.7 Eagle H beam rods
3.5" Eagle Crank
2 bolt studded mains
ARP bolts pretty much everywhere
baby 218/224 cam
comp 1.6 rrs
lt1 heads - 2.02 valves - mild port. Flow @ 255 up top

Stock radiator - stock fans - no hvac

I did the majority of my initiall tuning yesterday. Felt really good to do that much driving and have nothing break, car still runs, turbo still feels tight - No issues, well almost.

Megasquirt has performed beautifully. Once you see the big picture and understand it all tuning comes pretty natural. Its responsive to changes made and you can actually see progress being made as you do your tuning. With lt1 edit I always felt like I was either right or wrong. EDIS8 seems to be doing its job too. Plug are nice and tan, don't really show any detonation.

Power wise I can't say that it feels like an absolute terror. I still need to get a timing light on it. I am running 18 degrees of timing under boost and I still think my pickup/trigger may be off a few degrees, so it may be less timing. I need to find a mustang to pick on so I will feel faster. The turbo spools almost instantly when you floor it. 8psi feels good, but the lowish 9-1 compression doesn't help. I can't really rate my power to the wheels from a butt meter. I think it would show a nice fat torque curve though. Pulls pretty smooth up to 5800ish, haven't gone higher yet. Need to tweak fuel a little more and maybe play with my timing.

Another thing power wise is I am now back in a 3.42 car, where before I was running 4.10s. I did a couple of 20-80 runs on I35 and it wasn't a slug getting there. But it wasn't a squirly uncontrollable beast. Then again my last setup was 520 to the wheels on spray and that would still go in a straight line on street tires.

I want some sort of exhaust. With the wastegate closed it sounds great, but as soon as it opens you hear more exhaust than turbo. For those that haven't seen pictures, I have a short 12"ish down pipe with the wastegate tied into that. No more exhaust right now.

Next real issue is fuel. I have Siemen 60# injectors, stock rails, stock regulator, stock lines, and a 255 pump. I think I am dropping pressure. I will hotwire to the battery tonight - Battery is in the trunk, so right now power goes to the front of the car, and then back on the tiny stock wires. I am having to run pretty much 100% - ok so 91% was the highest I got to so far, but running that high of a duty cycle should be about 600 hp, and I really don't think or feel like I am anywhere near that on low boost. I'll try to find some line or something to extend my gauge to where I can see it, I have one on the rail, need it up on the hood. Hoping at the worst some more voltage and a second pump will take me to 16ish psi.

Glad to hear its up and running and I'm optomistic that your making the megasquirt run. Maybe you can work out all the bugs and lets us know how to make it all work.

I thought I might share from experience how much of a difference it makes to get cool air into the engine. I relocated my airfilter way up next to the front mount intercooler so the intake air is nice and cool. Also some methanol injection would really help to. At least for my car it was like night and day. With a turbo car I would say that it is even more important.

I was worried too - Initial plans where to flip the turbo, k&n style filter in the fender and exhaust down below, it just fit better this way. It was 40 degrees while driving yesterday and the highest IAT I got was 52ish.... seems really low but I will wait for a hot day to see. Even at idle I didn't see anything extreme - Below 80 if I recall.

I'm assuming that reading is from the stock IAT and a scanner because its nowhere near the actual IAT's with 8-10 lbs of boost on a turbo. I still haven't found a good way to get actual IAT's either.

That is a screw in open element GM IAT (typhoon etc) in pretty much the stock location - right before the TB... I'm going to fire up my laptop and double check.

Ya I lied, cruise was 55ish and 8psi pull in 2nd and 3rd was up to 75 degrees. I bet a full 1/4 mile run would end up showing higher than that.

Nice setup. Every now and then I see a turbo setup that makes my pocketbook itch.

Looks good =D.... also glad to hear MS is working out good for you... really really glad to hear.

I wish i felt as confident in my car as you do yours. I feel like any little abuse the thing is gunna scatter. The megasquirt running the injectors should help out that feeling a little bit (stock computer just gives me NO comfort).

Now uh... would you mind if I PM'd ya and got a few questions on program setup and intial tune for MS? Im jsut gunna keep the stock computer running the timing for now so just the simple stuff =]

Thanks and good work!!

yes please tell us how the MS works

good to hear its all running for ya.

What are you basing your TDC off of? meaning, what type of timing marker?

at only 5psi; mine would tear the tires off at about 50mph roll on. 10psi was a joke, no traction till till 4th gear. 14 and 17 psi tunes were absolutley a joke.

You need to get a good timing marker onit. If the timing is off either way it can mean big problems. Either detonation, or super high EGT's!
