BOV setup procedure

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for setting up a BOV. I have very little drive-time on my car since I got it running, but what I did notice was that the BOV was not opening at all at light throttle, between shifts (say 5psi @3500rpm). I would only hear it open when I was on it pretty hard (+10psi) and let off. Then I got a big whoosh.

Should I reduce spring pressure?

Thanks,
Scott.

First off, how does it feel when ya hit 10psi

Second, what BOV are you using? If its a Tial 50mm, they come with 11psi springs normally, but you can get one as low as 7psi if thats what you prefer:

I'm using a TurboXS RFL BOV. I believe it came with one spring and a set of shims. I'm going to open it up today.

The car drives real nice. I need to get this WB o2 gauge on it to see where I'm at before I hurt something

I get like 5psi without much effort. About 3/4 throttle acceleration will yield about 10psi. I stabbed it one time and the boost gauge went from 5 to 13psi before I could back out of it. Hit the rev limiter and popped off the intake plumbing That's with the lightest spring in the WG too.

It's a lot funner to drive then the supercharged setup!

There are still a lot of little things that need to be done which probably wont happen until next spring. I'm just glad it is mostly complete and running.

To anyone considering a turbo kit: RealQuick for hotparts and ForcedInduction for a turbocharger

Glad to hear Scott! Definitely get it tuned! Should be a 9psi spring in the gate...

Thanks for the words and keep me posted!

You should set the BOV to open with slightly more vacuum then your car makes. Enough to compensate for deceleration.

Example, my car pulls 14 in hg at idle, my BOV opens at 16 in hg. When I got the BOV, with the 9psi spring, it opened at 20 in hg.

Hmmm mine are cheapos with no adjustment, but like its been said it really shouldn't take much to pull them open. Under boost there sould be @ equal pressure on both sides of the valve, tb closes and then you see vac on the back of it so it should be easy to pop open.

On real light driving you may not have them open... But with my baby turbo I get them to open even if my gauge/intake never sees boost - a larger volume of air is being displaced by the turbo and then the throttle closes - there will be boost in front of it for sure. I want to hook up a second gauge in the charge pipe for fun, just to see how much more it dances around.

Oh and 10psi only takes a little less than 1/4 throttle here

I had no adjustment either. I cut my Tial spring to make it what I needed. I ended up cutting it more for the blower.

I made sure my BOV was cracked open at idle. At 20 in hg, my blower would not open the BOV at 2 psi, only when I hit 7 psi would it snap open, then it would snap shut.

I may have to cut some spring coils. No adjustment here either. Just a handful of washers (zero installed).
