You can only do this if your bypass valve is located BEFORE your MAF. If the MAF is before the bypass valve, and you vent the bypass valve to atmosphere, the MAF has already metered this air and you are allowing it to escape - essentially a giant vacuum leak and your car probably won't run at all like this.

I see... maybe I'll do it when I get my solid intake tube because I will relocate the MAF anyway. thanks.

and don't count on the cool woosh sound. mine doesn't do that, vortech bov, blue top. mine isn't very loud, but it does make a whistling sound at normal driving speeds. sounds kinda like a small jet engine. sounds pretty cool, like its turbine powered.

I have mine open.....it does sound a little funny just driving around. If you do a quick burp of the throttle to clean it out....mine almost sounds like a BOV...not the same thing though.

I saw that video of MSM69Z28... that MONDO bypass sounds sick. That's the exact sound that I have been aiming to achieve. The kind of broken wooshing sound. Darius 240z also makes that sound and I love it.

I have the surge valve venting to atmosphere and I do NOT care for it. I agree that it sounds like a turbine jet but gets boring after a while and too loud - if you can have such a thing. I also have the HKS BOV and I do not care for it either. I cannot speak to the sound of alternative BOV's though.

Sorry to reincarnate this post... but if I vent my bypass to the atmosphere won't it suck in unfiltered air when I'm not boosting?

No, your SC will still be moving a good bit of air, and it'll be blowing out from the bypass. (which is exactly why you have a bypass in the first place.)

Ohhhhh I didn't think about like that.

I presumed that the engine would be sucking in air from both the s/c and from outside through the bypass opening. But the blower pushes more than the engine needs and the bypass lets air out. I see the light.

No. The bypass valve is there to vent pressure from the tubing between shifts and/or when the throttle is quickly closed to prevent stress on the impeller and blower bearings. If it was venting air during acceleration it would bleed boost. Boost is the reason you have a blower in the first place.

The best I've heard that has a unique sound and is priced very well is the Tial 50mm BOV. Sounds very cool.

But the bypass valve does stay open all the time accelerating or not until you reach about 75%-full throttle. So technically it is bleeding boost 99% of the time.

No. Most blower cars don't build boost until the throttle is tipped in anyway, and even for those that do make boost at light throttle it still doesn't apply since I was obviously talking about the car making power while accelerating.
