Can someone explain water/methanol injection?

Just wondering why you use water or methanol injection for a system like the STS. What is the purpose, how does it work, how is it installed, what is the benefit, is it needed, etc?
Just curious since I am interested in possibly going STS.
Thanks.

Re: Can someone explain water/methanol injection?

A properly designed water/alcohol injection system cools the intake charge, much like an intercooler. If the injection fluid is injected at high pressure through a fine nozzle it vaporizes in the intake manifold. Water especially and also alcohol have a very high heat of vaopization - they get COLD when they vaporize. Ever notice how cold they fell when evaporating from your skin? In fact, a properly set up system can be used in lieu of an intercooler (I do it that way).

Once in the combustion chamber, the octane of the fuel/air mixture is increased by the addition of water/alcohol. This allows more compression and/or timing which can produce more hp. Water in particular also has the effect of generating some very active oxidizing compounds when in the combustion chamber. These will promote more complete combustion of the fuel which also makes hp.

I use the kit from www.kennedysdynotune.com
