what if just the exhaust seal was bad and not the compressor seal?

how do the spark plugs look? It shouldn't be too hard to figure out if the engine is burning the oil or if the turbo is leaking oil into the exhaust...

Check to see if you have oil residue on the intake piping and DP....

What size line is the oil line to your turbo? When I blew the oil seals in my turbo, it blew into the downpipe and not the compressor side. Now I have a oil restrictor in the feed line to the turbo with a 1/8 orfice in it.

Just got back from a short ride and i've got more news: I have oil coming out of my of my oil filler cap, around the base. Guarentee it wasn't there before.

I paid more attention to when the motor smokes too. It doesn't smoke when accelerating... atleast it's not noticable. It smokes when I shift and a TON more if i'm even the least bit "on it." Also, it smokes at idle.

I don't have time to pull the plugs now... I have to keep working and then leave for omaha. I'll be back on friday night to work on it some more.

Updates:
I pulled a plug yesterday and found it to be quite oily. However, this might be because I just moved it from one building to another and didn't give it time to warm up and get a clean burn... just thoughts.

I also pulled the turbo. The exhaust is very sooty, but not oily. The intake is slighly oily. So, i've decided to build a pipe that comes off the turbo tech. manifold and dumps to the ground. That way I can leave the turbo off the motor and see if the motor actually smokes. Sounds like a plan.

Also, I had the turbo looked at by guys that rebuild turbo diesel turbos. He said there wasn't much play in the shaft (in either direction), so it was acceptable. Also, he said if my seals were bad, i'd have a great deal of oil coming out of the intake or exhaust side (whatever side, or both, is bad).

So, i'll let you know what the motor does without the turbo on. If it smokes then, I probably haven't got the rings to seat yet. But, what are some other options if it burns oil? My dad thinks it could be crankcase pressure issue. However, if i had blowby, wouldn't I get a lot of pressure out of the oil filler cap when it's off?

any thoughts on all this??

This is just someone's opinion looking at the situation as a whole...

After the whole AMS ordeal, and some of 'Cmarsh' (employee of AMS) posts here lately towards Brandy, I wouldn't trust AMS as far as I could throw them.

Good luck Jesse.

Ryan,

I appreciate the support and for the most part, we share the same opinion. However, I have nothing against Chris. As far as I know, he's an employee of AMS and very well could be a stand-up guy.

AMS on the other hand is a terrible business and shouldn't be allowd to sponsor any internet board. I think it's absolutely horrible that they continue to do business with the reputation they have. Remember, I'm not the only one who AMS jerked around.

More updates:
with the motor blowing all exhaust through the piping I built, there is absolutely no smoke what-so-ever. It's clean as can be. So, we've decided that it's in the turbo.

Jordon has a nice turbo for sale, just a thought

Not going to comment on the Marsh thing, other than he's been bashing me on another board that has slightly less moderator activity. Here is the link, judge for yourself what kind of person he is.

Ken,

I agree with you, but I can easily say that I'm not suprised. It seems that Marsh has the same attitude issues that the rest of the AMS crew has. My question, who is the other character on the site, the one that sides with chris all the time?

Does AMS sponsor any sites like this one? I know they used to sponsor ls1tech.com or ls1.com, but I'm not sure if they still do. I've honestly never heard of any company having so many problems and jerking people around so much, and still doing business.

Jesse before making the final decision about the turbo considers this. A 1/2 inch return for a turbo is way too small. I’m willing to bet the oil is getting backed up in the turbo causing it to blow past the seals. When that oil comes out of that turbo its like just mixed epoxy, very thick. Also with the turbo tech kit, draining is not the best, I know I use to have one. I had the same problem as you with the kit, oil in the intake, burning oil bad on start up then dissipating upon operating temp. This problem would come and go I think it depended on the outside or how the turbo felt that day. I sold the kit before fixing the problem but on a different car(DSM) the turbo didn't burn any oil.

With the turbo tech kit I would upgrade the return line to a -12 and maybe put a restrictor in the feed line.

sleeperz,

I actually thought of that too. However, i'm not sure how to remedy the problem. The line is half-inch ID, which is -8AN. The problem is, I just spend a TON of time welding in a new -8AN fitting to the pan . So, I really don't want to change it.
Also, since the turbo tech. manifold mounts the turbo so low, I can't really have the drain back and more sloped.

So, although it might not be the cheapest option, I think I might just buy a scavaging pump and put that in.

Thoughts?

Jesse
