poor boy wants to go fast and needs help
Hey guys don't post much but do a lot of browsing. I need help from the experts! Or at least some knowledgable people. I have a bone stock car I mean bone stock not one aftermarket part on it! Its a 96 ss and the tranny went 6sp so I'm tearing it down and wanna build it. But I have to budget build it the best I can. Mostly just by doing it myself problem is I have no skills and this is the first "project" I've ever had. I'd like a good street warrior capable of running low tens. Talked to jose at fi and I think well kno ill be going with a 355 with a tc78 goal is to build it in a year at least. Ill be going with ai for heads altho I should call lloyd never spoke with him before. The bottom end will have forged rods and pistons for sure here's question #1. What can the stock crank handle? Would it handle enough hp and abuse of street driving with the goal of low ten ets? Or while I'm in the block anyways (rods/pistons) just don't skimp and put a forged crank in? Curious as to opions on stock vs forged cranks and question #2 is ill be fabbing up my own hotside altho I have no fab skills what so ever so a lil guidence is appreciated I wish I had the money for realquicks setups but like I said I aint rich altho they are extremely well priced for fi. With that being said how do u convert the collector to accept a v band and not the bolt flange as it comes with shorty headers.....do u cut off the flange and weld a new one on or cut the collector? I'm confused at that part? Sorry for my ignorance trust me I kno I have a lot to learn and still read but any help I appreciate and sure ill have more questions as I go but those two I'm curious of right now thanks guys/gals

If your gonna want low 10s please build it and save yourself from tearing it down twice.
Do a forged crank, H-beams and JE, diamond, wiseco etc pistons
Also I would go splayed 4 bolt mains and head and bottom end ARP studs and ARP rod bolts.
Also the 6 speed is gonna be a killer, they dont take the power without spending alot of money (depending on how hard u push your car)
V-bands are just a different style clamp...it welds onto the size pipe you bought it for. So if u were modifying a header, you would cut just the 3 bolt flange on and weld a v-band in place.
Just go to theturboforums.com and to alot of reading and searching...thats what I did last year when I was a newb and now I am building my second setup.

Wow only one reply. Its all good thanks jay for the useful info and btw after seeing u replied I went thru and read your build thread and I will say you are doing a great job and a inspiration for me as I'm like you will be doing all this in my driveway.lol. But I did a lot of reading and boy I think I'm in trouble and gonna spend a ton/small fortune but I'm prepared to and gonna do it right at all costs and no matter how long it takes me. In your build I seen you got a tubular header kit from jegs. A few questions. How thick are your flanges? Reason I ask is cause I called jegs today and they have flanges 5/8 thick is that a good size? Also they don't lt1 specific flanges but said they have square and d port and our heads are square port according to the guy but I thought they were dport....btw I read a lot like I said and the new plan yall will like this. Ima boring your idea of up and forward facing headers to a center mount turbo I'm cut my rad support and fab a new one etc you know how that plans/plays out going to build a 383 stroker all forged callies crank oliver rods and diamond or je pistons.afr 227s or brodix heads of course ported to the max and a single plane and all other goodies a lot of fuel etc etc.I figured I'd mock up my turbo completely first before I pulled the engine for the rebuild so I wouldn't have to worry about fabbing up the hotside/coldside along with the headaches of a new engine being installed. As far as turbo since I decided to go with a 383 I'm thinking either a t88 or the new t91 t4 flange turbo. Go big and do it once the right way fellas.....should be fun and interesting harnessing the power thru a 6spd.so with going with a header kit from jegs for a t88 or t91 should I do 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 tubing? That's the next question. Sorry for the long posts just wanna elaborate on what I'm thinking so far and as for now a big jump from a 355 tc78 huh....lol lmao thanks again yall and I will be leaning on yall and yalls support and knowledge as I continue this and there will be a build thread

Jegs flanges are only 3/8..which is fine. I built mine 3/8s....I also just built a set for dirtydavew on here that are 1/2. The flanges I make are a SBC port (round) but a LT1 bolt pattern (just a sbc pattern shifted down)
Also 1 5/8 will do....I stayed with it to help with quicker spool times. Also there are alot of guys making 1000rwhp on 1 5/8.
Also go with a T6 flanged turbo on a 383...little slower spool but it is needed to let the 383 breath! You will love the top end of a t6 turbo. Mine picked up 38RWHP from 6170-6250! thats only 80rpm!
you should look into the BW S480's etc. the borg warner line is very impressive and relativly cheap too.
Good luck! And thanks for the comments!

Have you made any decisions on where the Turbo itself will sit? I wanted to keep A/C, Power Steering etc (but shed the Air Pump and ABS Block). I also wanted the stock radiator and it's stock location. That really limits you to either my setup(Front of the engine, drivers side, kind of turned a bit) or in that bay area where the ABS block was.
If you go vertical on the radiator, you gain a lot of room.

Thanks guys I haven't looked and found a specific place yet to where the turbo will be located. I'm toying with the idea of doing a veritcal radiator and fabbing new supports just I have to read up on em to see how they cool and get the air needed etc cuz I believe our stock ones are slanted in and gets air from the bottom air damn so I don't wanna run into any coolings problems of the rad. But I plan to order my tubular header kit next fri when I get paid whoo payday aint soon enough and after I get some pipes and started ill have a better idea of where ima put that thing. Ill def keep yall posted on that. I was leaning on a t4 flange cuz I heard they were easier to spool which the car is a street driven 6sp so I need that but also I always thought the t6 flanges were for bigger turbos and t4 were "midframe" turbos? Just want a grab to the seat fun time more then likely ill run the t88 it can make good power deliver great times altho I've seen it on ls1s and not many lt1s. But that t91 sounds good too tho ahh decisions decisions ill have to holla at jose again it sounds like. What size turbos are you guys running on 383s and yalls et goals or if its a fun street car?

On mine, I'm running the TC76.
Goals: 600rwhp (got more than that )
Engine: I originally told Jose I wanted 600rwhp thru my (then) 383 but decided to just buy a virgin 2 bolt block, convert it to splayed 4 bolt caps and just go 355.
My car is an EXTREMELY fun street car. I daily drove the 6 speed, 4.10 gear car in Houston, TX bumper to bumper traffic. Mid summer too. Drove like a stock honda civic in that format. But get to a clear stretch of road and have a Sportbike trying to show off? Lol... Watch his eyes bug out when I pull away from him. Heck, I had to let off a little at times because the rear end was trying to claw it's way past the front end. Still pulled away from the skinny kid on the sport bike.
Now I have put Ford Motorsport 3.55's in the rear and I'm in the midst of putting in a built TH350 w/Vigilante Torque Converter. More fun on the way!

Go with a 76mm or more...I have a 74mm but wanna go bigger. Also get a minimum .96 AR hot if your going T4....If you can get your hands on a GT42-45 that would be perfect, bc you can get those with like a 1.10AR hotside.

That sounds like a beast dirtydave well just got off the phone at forced inductions I think/sold on the idea of a well built 383 with a t6 91 should be more power then ill never need and will never have to upgrade haha any opions?

Also just so you know you can make like 8-900 on a BW S400 75mm also.....Im making 583rwhp thru a TH400 on my 74mm turbo. on 8psi...plans are 15-20psi now.

It's gonna be a slug with a 6 speed in my opinion. If it was a stalled auto for track use, then I'd say go for it. If it is a street car with a six speed... then you will be like a supra. Should have no problem reaching 750-800rwhp with a T76 T4 turbo. Expect 900-1000rwhp with a PT88 T4 setup. People always go bigger because they want the dyno number... but don't get mad when a D1 LSX 6 speed drags your T91 6speed.

Very true realquick thanks for the informative post I agree I would like something that's good with a 6sp so maybe bigger isn't always better! So let's say no t91 but I will def be keeping the 6sp what would be a good option then spool wise and street/track that will net good goals and later on potential a 355 tc78 or a 383 t88? Comments fellas as it will be one of thos two builds right there and keep in mind a 6spd
