Single turbo ls1

Single turbo ls1
Just recently I got this crazy idea that a turbo would be fun. I've been looking in this forum for about 30 minutes and my search has turned up all kinds of stuff for the lt1 but what about us ls1 guys? I did find out that you want to keep the boost low since the bottom end isn't really capable of higher boost numbers. And an entire premade kit is just a lil expensive for me.
I was thinking like 6 psi would be just enough boost to have that fun I was thinking about in my crazy idea. I've seen the Honda guys scrounge up parts and have a complete turbo system for well under $1k. Is it possible for us to do the same? I'm guessing a turbo, new injectors, piping, turbo header, and a custom pcm tuning would be required. Has anyone done this cheaply?

There are some LS1 turbo systems out there.
LS1 motorsports had a single turbo setup, and I believe Stainless works is now retailing it.
Turbo Technology recently came out with a 'race' single turbo setup. Mightymouse has been having good results with it.
To answer your question though, you will not "properly" turbocharge your LS1 car cheaply.
Unless you can do all the fabrication yourself, you will need to buy a system. And, FWIW, the cost of the actual turbocharger should be the least of your worries.
The most inexpensive route would be the rear mount STS turbo. (turbo placement is where your muffler is now). It will have some limitations in regards to maximum power and response, but should work well for modest power gains.
And as with any forced induction system, you will then need to address the fuel system/tuning/driveline.

some of the kits on the market seem to be priced well when compared to custom set ups.
heres an example of what can be done if you fab your own
