What is a good low boost supercharger for a stock motor?

First off- 5200ft above sea level. I'd like to make 5-6lbs boost for a little more power when I need it, but also keep my fuel mileage for now (18 in city). Down the road I'd like to put in a nice cam/LE2 heads, but that's when I don't use the car as my daily driver.

I'm not looking to build an 800HP beast ever with this car. If I want to turn a 9sec 1/4mi, I'll go buy another liter motorcycle. Ultimately a reliable 450-500WHP is the overall goal of this car. A power adder would be nice for now to make up for 20%HP loss from this altitude.

What is the best bang for the buck supercharger setup for my goal? What kind of price range am I looking at new/used?

Thanks,
James

An S-trim or P1SC should be fine. Even though you don't plan to build more boost (few of us did in the beginning) I would suggest a T-trim or a D1SC and pulley them down. Prices range from $1500 used (cheap) to $5000 new. As far as fuel mileage I can't help you there, my car wasn't designed for mpg. If you are just looking for a little extra cheap power on occasion that will retain your stock mpg other times you might want to consider nitrous.

Yeah if you want to keep you mpg I would say nitrous is a better bet for you, BUT if you want the power as a daily driver where you have it on demand, then definitely stick with a supercharger. I dont think they hurt your mileage that bad unless you're boosting from one light to the next everywhere you go. That being said, I would say a vrotech v2 or v1 s-trim pullied down will get you where you want to be, but dont plan on running more than 7 psi on the stock bottom for long unless you've got a great tune, and even then yer pushing the limits of the stock pistons and ring gap. I had to learn the hard way, but I was prepared for the consequences. Now ive got forged pistons and rods, stock crank.

No nitrous- I hated filling the bottle, takes forever to build bottle pressure under 70deg day, higher chance of blowing the motor, etc. I keep my foot out of the pedal 95% of the time to get mileage, but still enjoy having fun with it on occasion

As far as boost is concerned- at this alitude a 10.5:1 compression motor is only like 9:1, and 6psi will probably be a 20% increase in power. Therefore, I'm only stressing the motor the same as a sea-level bolt-on car. I've owned a high-boost turbo car before, and I'm not going that route again because it gets too expensive.

What are the opinions on the procharger or powerdyne?

I suggest go with one of realquicks turbo setups! This way when your not driving the car hard you get the same milage....and if you want more power later put a boost controller on it.

procharger's are good. Powerdyne's are okay, but you will never be able to make too much power with one.

I would go with an intercooled Procharger or an aftercooled vortech. Both would leave for some growing room.

Ok, procharger it is! Going to build the drivetrain up first (s60, strange DS, spec 2 clutch), then bigger brakes, then put on the SC.

I researched into doing heads/cam first or the procharger. I love how most SC posts say: "careful not to put too much boost on or you will blow it up". When it seems to me that basically 50% of cam installs end up in wasted rod bearings within 1k miles. I bet I can get 20k miles with low boost and intercooler (110k on the clock now) before the motor gets tired.

Is there a kit for the p600b. The p1sc kit is a little pricey and a little more than what I need. Overall goal of the car is 500RWHP and I figure it can be done with LE2 heads, 6psi intercooled and a good tune. Has anyone made there "own kit"? I'm thinking I need the FMU, 255LPH pump, injectors (how big??), front mount IC, plumbing, p600b and mount, tensioner, crank drive and belt, tunercat and datamaster.

Thanks,
James

i would spring for the p1sc. you WILL want more down the road...trust me. The p600 is decent, but do you want to take the chance of knowing if you want more power, your going to have to buy a new blower down the road? Do it once, do it right.

Cheap, Fast, Reliable. Pick two.

I understand what everyone is trying to say about wanting bigger later. I built a 15psi turbo'd miata ages ago, and got addicted to wanting more. Turns out, I had to part out the car because it was going to cost too much to build motor/tranny/bigger turbo/ etc. The lesson I learned is to set an initial goal and stick with it.

""Cheap, Fast, Reliable. Pick two."" If I want all 3, I'll buy another liter bike for 5k and run mid 10's all night without a problem Still have my full leathers in the closet!

Thanks for the advise.
