Fuel Rail Harnessing R&R?

Hi all,

A rat chewed up the fuel rail harnesses on both sides back when the vehicle was stored from 2006-2009. I took it to a shop and they spliced them and covered it with electrical tape. Really **** poor job. I'm afraid to take the tape off and see what the splices look like. Everything works and the vehicle operates and idles good.

Is it possible to R&R these harnesses, or would it be better for me to re-perform the electrical work using solder lap splicing and heat shrink tubing?

Any recommendations on dressing this up?

Thanks,

Re: Fuel Rail Harnessing R&R?

I have an M6, but this is similar. It looks like the fuel injector and other nearby harnesses don't have any breakpoints back to the PCM. So unless I R&R the whole engine harness, it looks like performing a cleaner repair, and dress up the harnesses in place.

The only difference between the M6 and A4 harnesses would be at the trans. Top of the engine is identical.

The critical issue with the injectors is that you have the correct ground wire to the correct injector. The PCM supplies the ground in a specific sequence to fire the injector at the right time.

Check vs. the PCM wiring diagrams on Shoebox’s site:

Re: Fuel Rail Harnessing R&R?

Thank you. I'll inspect what's under the tape and see if it can be cleaned up or if I should entertain another engine harness. If I had all the connectors and diagrams I could fabricate it.

If wire is in good shape I may end up just replacing loom around the engine bay where worn, brittle and broken, and dressing up any poor workmanship on the splices. Would rather use aerospace black sleeving but would be best if doing a harness swap.

The factory service manual has complete details on the harness - pinouts for the connectors, location of all splices, things like the A/C diode, fusible link, etc. The presentation is not crystal clear, but the schematics show where In the circuit the splices occur, and a table in the electrical section describes the locations. Shoebox has excellent tables for the major engine harness to body harness connector pinouts/wire colors.

Hi Injuneer,

I downloaded the 1994 service manual that you shared thank you, and have looked over much of the resource material at Shoebox. The overall integrity of the engine wires seem to be pretty good, aside from the questionable workmanship repairs on the fuel injector and nearby harnessing. And loom being brittle, broken, or missing in some areas.

You ever removed/replaced an entire LT1 harness with engine still installed?

Re: Fuel Rail Harnessing R&R?

Have not. When the stroker was built, obviously engine was pulled, and all harness work done. It was complicated by the fact we had to piggyback the wiring for an aftermarket engine management system, while maintaining certain functions within the stock PCM.

Shoebox may be better equipped to answer your question. If he doesn’t respond here, send him a PM.

Re: Fuel Rail Harnessing R&R?

Right on. If there's not a huge problem with routing, or having to tear down much of the engine to facilitate routing and connector mates, might be worth entertaining.
