trouble starting

recently a problem popped up and my car wont start and after cranking it for a few seconds. it doesnt make adiferenece if its hot or cold. once it does start it runs fine although sometime the rpm's shoot up kinda high and sit at like 1500 for a good ten seconds. what could this be?

Don't understand that sentence. Do you mean it has to crank for a long time before it finally starts?

If that is the case, try turning the key on but engine off. Then turn it off. Do this cycle 5 or 6 times before finally cranking it over. If it fires right up you probably have a stuck check ball in the fuel pump assembly that is allowing the fuel to draw back away from the engine back into the tank.

Check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail (Schrader valve). Your fuel pressure should be greater than approximately 35 psi after the system is primed (key to on but don't crank the engine). If you fuel pressure drops off it will cause hard starting but will run fine once started. Do a search on hard starting.
