2nd or Overdrive

2nd or Overdrive
I race my 97 Camaro in the 1/8 dragstrip. Its got 273 gear in it and it only gets to 2nd gear by the 1/8. I put the car in 2nd gear when I race it only because sometimes when I think I might be breaking out I can let off the gas and the car will kind of nose dive and that will slow me down some then I will shift to N after I cross the finish line. But it seems like 1 out of 20 or so runs the car will go down the track and will rev up a little when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. Its like it dont want to go to 2nd but eventually does. It seems to kill about 6-8 hunderths of a second off my time when it does this. Like I said it dont do it often but someone told me that the reason is because you wasnt supossed to leave it in 2nd because of something electronically. They said I should put it in Overdrive. What do you guys think.

Re: 2nd or Overdrive
Put it in Drive, not Overdrive... it is a night and day difference when you're redlining it with the pedal to the floor. Make sure to slowly roll onto the throttle too so as to not spin.

Re: 2nd or Overdrive
I come off the line wide open. I dont have any trouble spinning since I put the Nitto Drag Radials on the car. So your saying dont put it in 2nd or Overdrice but put it in regular drive. Do you think thats what was causing it to act like that.

Re: 2nd or Overdrive
Well I know shifting is a bit sloppy in OD... and well launch in second just makes you slow, though if it is bracket racing you may be onto something good if it is more consistent. But generally it is accepted that D is more responsive, and I think this is mainly contributed to the fact that the tranny isn't given as much oil flow in OD as in D, like in OverDrive oiling is cut to 80% or something(as opposed to 100% in Drive). I'm not sure of the actual numbers, I just pulled those out of my *** as an example. Go find an empty road and go 0-100 in D and then 0-100 in OD. Big difference.

Re: 2nd or Overdrive
If it's revving up between the shift the clutches in the tranny are slipping and it sounds like your tranny is trying to give up. If you notice it doing it more frequently I would definatley look into it but if not then maybe its just the 2nd thing. As for where to leave the shifter I would leave it in D but i drive a 6spd so take that with a grain of salt and get another opinion other than mine.
