4th alternator in 5? yrs
Almost on first name basis w/the guys at Advance Auto Parts...
Anyway, got them to order a "new" (actually remanufactured) alternator last night just in case I ended up needing it today.
dropped by there on the way to work this AM and have them check the alternator... bad diode this time. (Previous ones all had bearing squeal issues).
Car volt meter was just below 1/2 way, when it is usually at what I'd "guestimate" was 14 volts. Speedometer fluctuated wildly when the volts were too low. (Drove to work at what speedo said was 105 mph yesterday )
Dude that checked the alt said it was only putting out 40 amps.
Will replace the alt tonight and take core back in the morning.
Thought I'd pass it along.

FYI: Buy a NEW, not remanufact., alt. When you install it, make sure the wires and connectors are corrosion free. Especially the bat. wire. Work your way down the wire from either end, bending it, and feel for internal corrosion. Finally make sure the bat. is fully charged before starting the car.
