AC recommendations/ fixes for 1995 Z28 camaro.
I was told by a mechanic that the 95 Camaros air conditioning uses an older kind of refrigerant that is now very expensive to come by. Is this true?
If it’s true is there a guide somewhere on a recommended AC system swap? Would that just be a new compressor? Im not a mechanic but I can confidently say im good at figuring stuff out, how hard would this project be? I’ve replaced the thermostat, EGR valve and fixed the rear view mirror motors for an example of my abilities lol.
The air conditioning refrigerant was refilled about 1 year ago by a mechanic and it worked great for a few months. Could it just be a leak? Or are there other factors that could cause the AC to stop blowing cold?
sorry there’s a lot of questions in here. Don’t feel obligated to answer them all. I’m just looking for any answers, tips and recommendations. Thank you!

Your 95 left the factory with R-134A refrigerant (confirmed via 1995 factory service manual). It should still be available. Synthetic refrigerants are being phased out of production over thee period 2020-2030. The price of the R-134A will increase over the years. I haven’t looked recently, but check the price.
The “mechanic” may think they were still using R-12. That is difficult to find and expensive.
There should be a label in the engine compartment showing the type of refrigerant. I believe GM was using R-134A starting in 1993.
