Angry BROKE a lug stud...

Yeah, I know I misspelled BROKE...

I was doing my wheels yesterday. My buddy went to take off my driver's side rear wheels. he had trouble taking it off I tried and snapped one of the studs. I don't know how it happened. I did my springs last weekend and I ALLWAYS hand thread the lugs first.

Anyway, is it OK to drive on this till next weekend, when I can replace it.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

You should be okay, I have seen some people drive with more then one broken which is very foolish in my opinion. I would definitely get it fixed though, it is a fairly simple repair.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

don't you have to pull the axle out to replace it?

that doesn't sound like fun.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

Nope. Just finish removing the wheel and rotate to where the offending stud has nothing behind it, you know, like the backing plate. Then you just take a hammer and hammer it out. Pep Boys stocks the replacements, so just pick one up on the way home. Slide it in and place a larger nut or some other kind of "spacer" on the stud then begin threading your new lug not on it until it uses the pressure to seat the stud.

Remove the nut and spacer then re-install tire. Voila!

one broken stud on a 5 lug wheel? yes you'll be fine... be careful if you have to get on the highway.

well i know there isn't a ton of room between the axle flange and the end of the axle tube. not to mention the parking brake guts all behind there.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

I might have to take the brake backing plate off.

I also drive on the HW to get to work.

Yes you can drive on it, keep it under a 100MPH.

To remove damaged stud. Remove wheel and put an expendable lug nut on the damaged stud. Whack the **** out of it with a BFH. It will pop out the back side.

Put the new one in through the back and use a non-enclosed lug to thread press it in. You may need some washers as spacers to do this. Piece o' cake.

I like to use a small amount of silver anti-sieze on my lugs. This will ensure you dont have any more frozen lugs.

10 minutes to change a stud and they're available at most part stores. Rotate axle till you get clearance, then use a hammer. Done.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

Hopefully you don't have traction control... the reluctor gears behind the axle flanges can complicate things.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

Yeah I do... I'll figure it out.

Are the stock axles C-clips?

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

I drove my car for a long time without one because I just never checked after I bought it. You'll be fine, I took it to some pretty high speeds when I first got the car and I was ok. Replacing it is no problem at all, just do like others have posted.

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

The stock axles are c-clips. It is not that hard to remove them. Hammering on the axle can be trouble. Done it many times without an issue, but always tempting fate.

Don't lube the lugs. Designed to be dry. Start the nuts by hand every time. Never have a problem as long as you don't overtorque them....

Re: BROKE a lug stud...

I've been doing this for a while. It's actually kind of embarrasing that this happened. I have a routine when it comes to tightening the lugs. I thread them on buy hand w/ the socket. Get them seated, hit them w/ the impact w/ two quick bursts. Then I go over them again w/ a short burst on each.

I've been doing it like that for years and never had a problem
