Buying A Z28
#18
Hey I am about 2 hours South of you in Macon, GA. From what I've noticed any LS1s around here that have under 90k are in the 8-10k range and anything less usually has a ton of miles. I saw on craigslist in Atlanta a lady selling an 99 LS1 with over 200k miles for $6k. It's easy to find them cheaper on here and on Ebay, but then you have to worry about the money to get the car to you if they are in another state. Sometimes it evens out to just buy it locally for a little more money.

my brother said a 6 speed in a V-8 will throw you around, also he said a 6 speed camaro would have more problems, i'm guessing just because it has more miles? a stripped clutch or whatever? and plus i bet they'd be more expensive.
He also talked to me about getting a LS1 to LS6 kit which i'm not sure if i want to do but i know it's on summit. it will be a while before i get my camaro but i'm still looking into what to put on it

Don't waste your time on the LS1 to LS6 kit. There are much better mods for the $ that will net more power and no loss in drivability. There are also much better places to get LS1 parts from than Summit. Spend some time browsing the supporting vendor's sights. You can find a link to a page listing them at the top of this page.
My advice is to get used to the power is comes with first and work on getting the most out of that power (suspension and tires) then go for the basic bolt ons like lid and catback if it doesn't already have them. Also check local sections in forums and get used parts.

yep..well i'm 1500$ into my camaro saving fund lol, I'm thinking about what everyones saying, some people say don't get the 98's because they have a 98 only ECU, some say it has a closer bore to avoid piston slap(what is that?) And i'm stilll looking around, wondering if it would be easier to buy a good looking car with a lot of miles and swap a new ls1/tranny in it, or just buy one with about 60K miles used..I have about a Year and a half to decide all this stuff though, and the reason i was thinking about the LS1-LS6 swap is i want to run all motor, don't want to run cams either. Brother said it was probably the best, also, it can't have any major "downtime" My brothers 02 grand am GT turbo charged was down for about a year because he was getting parts/getting it tuned and my mom would KILL me if she had to go through that again. His grandam is still currently not working lol. I was just wondering all of your opinions..i know i'd go with a CAI, some type of headers..and a flowmaster exhaust( the only one that sounds good, IMO).
Thanks guys
Thanks guys

Why in the heck would that matter? I've never heard it before, but even if it's true, it's still tunable.
Piston slap is a noise that some LSx engines make on startup when they're cold. It's annoying (more to some than others) and harmless. It's a side effect of the all-aluminum engine. The bit about closer bore is BS. All LS1's (and LS6's) have exactly the same bore.
Buy whatever you can afford, as long as it's been well cared for. LSx engines last a long time.
There's only one cam in an LS1. Same for an LS6.
Just curious -- why don't you want to upgrade the cam? That's the most critical upgrade to make more power without using nitrous or forced induction.
How much horsepower do you want?
The difference between an LS1 and an LS6 is the heads and the cam. A complete LS6 is a VERY expensive way to get those heads and that cam. Unless you buy a car with a blown engine, swapping in an LS6 would be a pretty dumb thing to do. No offense.
Getting something like a Grand Am tuned is expensive, because it's not a "performance car", so hardly anyone does it. Ditto for performance parts. The simple fact is, hardly anyone makes upgrade parts for a Grand Am. As a result, they're expensive and hard to come by, which is what's slowing your brother down.
With an LS1, you can mail-order 400rwhp pretty darn easily, and it won't cost you that much.
For starters, skip the CAI and get an airbox lid. It's worth ~10 rwhp and costs $100. Unless you drive frequently on dirt roads, get a cotton filter (K&N, etc). Then get one of the ram-air setups (SSRA, super-sucker ram air, is a popular one).
If you're looking to add horsepower to an LS1, look elsewhere for your exhaust. Flowmaster's catback for the LS1 cars has been proven to reduce power relative to the stock catback. Trust me, there are others that sound good.

really? I was speaking of the Summit LS1-LS6 swap that costs 2100, i don't want to upgrade the cam because i know theres tuning involved, which could cause downtime, and plus i love hearing the exhaust..i dont' like the sound of a cam(atleast a really high rise one) I'm sure i'd add nitrous onto it no doubt, as we have to every car we race lol.
You are exactly right abaout the grand am thing, he had to custom make everything for his turbo kit and it's the only turbo 3400 known to..man..lol.
I'm curious to know which other exhausts sound good on a camaro? From all the sound clips i've heard borla sounds raspy along with slp? I have flowmasters on my 97 dakota v8 magnum and they sound really good...What other exhaust is there? are you talking about the SLP kit? cause i was interested in that...
And i agree, i was looking at the SLP lid for it, i know i could upgrade the manifold(Which one do you suggest..or do you suggest me swapping one? The weiands, BBK's, etc, and the mm of the throttle body?
I'm new to LS1's but not to V8's haha
THanks for the help guys!
