Question Dash Noise

I have some sort of what I will call a "fluttering" noise that sounds like it's coming from some where under/in my dash. I initially thought it was my clutch or something in that area. I had a new clutch, pressure plate & throw out bearing installed. This did not help. I can put my head down close to the ash tray area & hear the noise. It does not do it all of the time. Mostly when I first start the car. I have removed the console to help find the noise. Still can't locate it. I really can't tell if it's inside of the car or outside. This is why I replaced the clutch & all components. Its driving me crazy! Has anyone experienced this & if so, did ya find the source of the problem!? If so, what is it! HELP! Thanks. (By the way, we're talking about a 1984 Z 28 w/manual tranny, 5.0 HO engine)

Re: Dash Noise

The wastegate on my GN makes a fluttering noise. Maybe you have a turbocharger!

Does it make the noise when:

1. the car is stationary and in neutral with the engine idling?
2. the car is stationary and in neutral with the engine revving?
3. the car is stationary and in gear (clutch disengaged) with the engine idling?
4. the car is stationary and in gear (clutch disengaged) with the engine revving?
5. the car is rolling and in neutral with the engine idling?
6. the car is rolling and in neutral with the engine revving?
7. the car is rolling and in gear while engine braking?
8. the car is rolling and in gear while maintaining constant RPM?
9. the car is rolling and in gear while accelerating?

Re: Dash Noise

Actually the car makes the noise in ALL of the scenarios you mentioned. My noise is a fluttering, knocking or plain old weird noise.

Well crap, that doesn't narrow it down at all!

I don't think I can be of much help, except to say that if it does it in all of those situations, there's a decent chance that it's not your engine or transmission.

Just a chance, though.

Re: Dash Noise

I second your crap statement! You are correct in the point about it not being in the engine or transmission as I had the transmission checked out while it was out of the car getting the new clutch & etc installed. I had engine tuned & compression checked as well as some other stuff, ruling out engine! I do appreciate your posts & if you should get a "brain-storm" please send it my way! Thanks again! (I'm thinking it must be some sort of vacuum problem underneath the dash)

Re: Dash Noise

Maybe the HVAC valves? They're vacuum operated and can make some strange noises.
