Dex-a-cool or regular?

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
you had green originally, so i'd stay green
but my uncle (who's a veteran mechanic) swears by the dexcool because everything comes out clean as a whistle
it really is good stuff
but i still use green
if you drain everything (as in all the green), you can use dexcool
just remember to change it on it's interval

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
I agree with Tang, use the green stuff. I have green in the 94Z and though I change it often (twice/yr -- week antifreeze+distilled H2O+Water Wetter in summer and 70/30 antifreeze/H2O in winter storage) the radiator looks brand new inside. My 2000 Blazer with Dexcool has been flushed twice since I bought it 1.5 yrs ago and the heater core is plugging up again (3rd time ). This spring it's getting completely flushed and I'm going with the green stuff.

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
I'd keep the green in it. My Blazer was 3yrs old when I bought it and the Dexcool was already mud. Isn't that stuff supposed to last 5yrs/100,000 miles The green would have no effect on water pump operation. I have heard of some electric WPs having probs with a set screw on the shaft coming loose causing the impeller not to spin or it's the stat not being open yet. Are any of the hoses severely pinched or crimped?

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
this thread sucks due to the fact that i have dex-cool and have changed it 3 times and i thought it would be better
but i would have to flush the whole system and then add the green stuff.
i guess i am at a loss for words

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
I'm not too sure how true this is on our cars but...
I've been told (not but some dumb salesmen or mechanic) that if your car came with dexcool, then keep it. I know there have been problems with it but isn't specialy designed to lubricate things such as the waterpump?
Could be wrong... but I've never had a problem with my dexcool *knock on wood*

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
Dex cool is just another way for gm to make money IMO. I hate the stuff. Like said it turns into mud, and it costs wayyyyy too much. Anything i have ever worked on coolant wise has been converted to green stuff.
Just dont mix the 2. Flush it completely if your gonna use green where orange once was.

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
I add WP lube to my distilled H2O/Water Wetter mix and have had no probs. I've heard Dexcool + tap water = instant mud I always use bottled distilled water in my cooling systems and will flush the Blazer with it this spring and go to the green stuff.

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
any reason or explanation that it turns to mud ??
if this is the case that sucks. like i said i have had the radiator drained 2x's and then my water pump went out this past fall, so it got drained again and had some water put threw it.
i bought my car used, so that is why i have done the "drain and fill" once a year.

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
It has something to do with the impurities in the tap water reacting with the Dexcool. It also doesn't have the silicas that the green antifreeze has and that's why it's better for the enviroment. Using distilled water eliminates any issues with sediment and impurities and does wonders for keeping a cooling system clean.

Re: Dex-a-cool or regular?
There was a big article in an industry magazine concerning issues with Dex Cool. Practically all problems were in the truck line. This was due to using the wrong radiator cap and overdosing with the stop leak pellets. Some problems "bled" over into the car lines, especially the overdosing with the stop leak pellets. The pellets are what cause the mud looking condition, and using tap water can also help cause it. Using both the pellets and tap water will just about guarantee a muddy looking coolant.
