I would switch to the green, the Dex doesnt seem to do anything different and it costs a whole lot more. Does anyone know chemically what is different?

 

how can you see the "muddy coolant??"

whenever i have drained the radiator it comes out pretty clean and the "filler tube with dipstick" always comes out clean.

is the mud in the heater core or does it stay in the system ???

You've been changing it every year AND using distilled water so you are already doing what you need to do to keep Dexcool from mudding up your cooling system. I wouldn't worry about switching as long as you keep up on the maintenance.

 

so the only time you have a problem with dex-cool is when you don't do proper maintenence?

 

I've seen some adverse reactions of the dexcool with aluminum. I'm not sure if it was directly involved, but a engine running green and an engine running orange, i've always had more corrosion with the orange.

IMHO, NO coolant should be in there very long no matter what the f'ing color. Just like 100k mile spark plugs...yeah right...

Exactly, except the Blazer is my 1st Dexcool vehicle so I'm just finding out about the corrosion thing. A 2000 Blazer (79,000mi) that looks like a$$ inside the radiator w/Dexcool compared to a 94 Camaro (99,000mi) that literally looks brand new inside the radiator. One guy at work said I was going to ruin my radiator and motor by changing the fluid twice a year and running distilled H2O and water wetter during the summer instead of antifreeze. Where I work, we make OEM aluminum radiators, lol, so it's pretty funny to hear that from a Machine Repairman. Anyway, I can vouch for Dexcool NOT lasting 5yrs/100,000 miles.

 

while i can't speak for you guys, as i mentioned before my uncle works on chevy trucks for maintenance
he says everytime he pulls parts out, they're as clean as they were when they were put in (with dexcool on a 5 year or 100k interval)
not sure if the radiators are aluminum or something else, but he says it works well in what he sees
he uses it in his cars too, so just something to throw into the mix

Very informative link ty! I recently swapped out my water pump on my 02' z28 and drained the radiator, I refilled it with what came in my car, which was dex-cool. I did notice that the over fill tank did have some orange crud on the "dipstick" of the overfill cap. I heard that depending on what type of radiator you have, depends on what type of radiator fluid you should use. How true is that? should a stock radiator from 02' z28 be using only dex-cool, like it came from the factory? Can I switch to the "green stuff" and what do you guys think the advantages or disadvantages would be? After reading that article I am tempted to purchase that video but am unsure of what I should do. I think if I maintain my radiator fluid levels like I should everything will be ok.

 

just keep the dexcool
that's my rule of thumb
they put what works in from the factory
just keep up on maintenance and check it periodically

 

how many bottles of dex cool will i need to fill my radiator and the recovery tank??? i have gone completely out of coolant.

 

Just one bottle will do, make sure you do a 50/50 mix of dex-cool and water.

EDIT: I would also purchase a measurement funnel, they sell them just for this purpose. It will allow you to make sure you have all/most of the air our of the system, they're only a couple of dollars.

 

Be sure to use distilled water. Open your bleeder screws.

 

they didn't ahve regular dex cool..they had dex cool approved prestone 50-50 antifreeze/coolant so i'm gonna use that.
