Do I need a stall converter for a 224/224 cam?
Hey guys, I just now joined this forum in hopes to find some better info on what I should make for the next step of my car. Im replacing the seized engine with a used 305 thats got a brand new comp cams 224/224. It says that they recommend a stall converter for its 1800-6000 rpm power range and was curious if the stock converter in my 700r4 would be ok?

For optimum performance, you will need a higher stall convertor that will match your heads, compression, fuel system, rear end gears, tire size.
I run a 350 with, 1500-5500 power band cam (slightly larger than RV cam of the day) stock heads, performer intake, quadrajet, 9.5 compression, turbo 350 trans, stock stall convertor, 25" tire and 2:73 gears. It sounded good. Didn't win very many races, but I shifted into 3rd gear at 100mph. Before it hit 1500 rpm it was worse than my stock 262 v8. After 1500 it set you back in the seat and pulled hard.
If you have 700 trans, your 1st gear is lower and will help. However your smaller displacement and larger cam are going to hurt.
More information about the car would get you a better answer, but hopefully you are getting the idea they all have to work together.

gotcha. From what I've found and been told I think i'm gonna be looking at a 2200-2400 stall. For some more info my car is a 1984 z28 thats getting a replacement used 305 put into it. The engine has a brand new Comp Cams c12-211-2 cam, Edelbrock EPS intake with a 600cfm AVS2 carb and the old heads off of my 305 HO motor. Transmission is a 700r4 out of a 1991.

It's the same setup as I had on the old engine when I first got the car so it should work. Distributor has an accel HEI cap on it. I was debating on throwing on my Holley 700 double pumper since i got it with the engine but I think it would go to waste with it being so big
