flushing heater core?

i've just been trying to fix little odds and ends on my car this week and its time to fix the heat.

ive seen a lot of people just flush the heater core and seem to be pretty successful. i was wanting to try this but i dont know which hoses to pull.

1. which hose do i take off the waterpump? there are two.. one is on top and one is on bottom i assume it is the one on top just not too sure?

2. which hose do i take off the firewall? there are two directly ontop of one another. i chased them down about a week ago and i thought it might be the bottom one but im not sure.

from what i understood about this i just need to take the 2 hoses off & hook my water hose up to one of them and let if flush everything out the other end. i was going to put the water hose in the hose that came off the waterpump since it looks bigger. is this correct? any input or pics/advice or whatever is welcome!

Re: flushing heater core?

Easiest way is to take both hoses off the firewall. The two hoses (one right ontop of the other) off the firewall are for the heater core, one is in and one is out. Just take both those off and put 1/2" hose on one and 3/4" hose on the other. (those are the sizes) Then clamp a garden hose to one of them and turn it on VERY SLOWLY! You can explode the heater core if there is too much pressure. I mean just enough so it is a steady stream, not pouring out. Wash it out one way, then switch the garden hose to the other side. Do that back and forth on each side maybe 3 times. Took me an hour.

So...

1. Do not take the hoses off the waterpump, you can but I think it is easier to take them off the firewall.

2. Take both the hoses off at the firewall.

Anymore questions just ask!

I like taking the hoses off at the water pump. Takes 15 minutes to do the flush.

Re: flushing heater core?

I have done it both from the waterpump and the firewall and the waterpump by far is much easier to do and less aggravating.

Re: flushing heater core?

If you take them off at the waterpump, be sure when you flush them you don't have a bunch of water getting all over you opti.
If your heater is not blowing cold, a plug heater core may be your problem or the top hose going to the water pump from the heater core my not have been bleed properly and air is trapped in it, thats what was wrong with mine that I fixed today. To bleed it, just loosen the bleeder screw in the hose till fluid comes out, the top one may be a bit higher than the water level in the radiator, I pushed the hose down till coolant came out then tightened the screw back down.

The hoses on the water pump are the smaller top passenger side and bottom passenger side on the waterpump. I removed the intake duct and it was easy to get to both.
