Gas gauge problem?

I noticed that I had over 250 miles on my trip meter today and saw that my gas gauge said I was at about a half tank (the needle was going back and forth from half to a quarter). When I pulled into the gas station I put the car in park and the needle went to full. I then put 10 dollars worth of gas in it and started up the car to find about a half tank, this time it was staying stationary. Anyone have an idea what's up with this gauge? I normally wouldn't care, but if I didn't have my trip meter things could have gotten bad.

Three posibilities. Indash gage is failing, in tank sending unit is failing or there is a problem with the wiring between the two.
Because the gage seems to be reading the input, my guess is the sending unit in the tank.

Sounds like the sending unit to me - I'd fill the tank all the way, reset the trip and try again. Mine acted a little strange once and that worked for me, wasn't fluctuating, just wouldn't go down - even tried shaking the car up and down wouldn't help.

Filling the tank full and resetting the trip seems to have done it. I mean I have only driven like 50 miles, but so far the needles seems pretty steady.
