Headers. Install at home?

How much trouble is it to install headers on a 95 Z28? Can this be done by a average do-it-your-selfer or does this need to be done at a shop? Don't have a lot of $ to shell out, and would like to install my self.

Re: Headers. Install at home?

I just finished installing a set of headers on my '95 Z. I had a friend's lift we could put it up on and I have to say, it was VERY important to have that lift. Without it, it's possible but difficult. The passenger's header had to come in from the bottom, so you would have to have the car jacked up pretty high.

So, it's possible I suppose... but you might check around town - many colleges allow you to use a lift during off-hours for an hourly fee. I would recommend it!

Oh, and just have all of your sockets, socket u-joints, and SEVERAL different length extensions handy...

You don't need a lift to do it. I installed my headers with the car on jack stands by myself. It's not hard to do at all...just time consuming.

What kind of headers do you have? You should be able to install any header at home but LT's you will have to get the car up really high. Which maybe more difficult at home.

Yes, shortys are your only option if you want to reuse the stock cats, unless you want to weld them in.

Don't have the headers yet, trying to figure out if I'm 100% I want some. I,m using the stock cat. I,m looking at getting the shorties. Seem like there easier to install. Nothing real expensive, just want to add a little hp and more powerful sound.

Go for it. I did shorties in my garage in a weekend mostly by myself.

Headers are almost always worth it... just make sure you dedicate atleast a weekend to the job, and have another vehicle, incase it takes longer then you think or you need to make a trip to the parts store. (or take a trip to the drug store to get band-aids for your busted up hands )

Did the headers make your car alot louder? Just wondered if its still louder using the single cat system.

With the rest of the exhaust stock the difference is subtle. Its rumblier but not much louder.

The rest of the system isn't stock. I have 3" cat back with flowmaster single in single out.

Re: Headers. Install at home?

Adding headers don't make the car sound louder in my personal experiences. They tend to smooth out the exhaust sound. The reason most people's cars are loud after header installs is that they ditch the cat at the same time too. Getting rid of your car will make your car extremely loud.

Will removing the cat make the car that much louder? Does it still have the same sound ,just louder?
