Exclamation Help with hood alignment CAI

Hey everyone,I bough a K&N FIPKII and attempted to install it on my own. I couldn't get the hood to close at all with it in.

I brought it to my mechanic and he charged me $100 to install it, for it needed "minor modifications".

The hood is slightly skewed now, but just enough to kill me inside. I've tried everything I could think of to fix it.

I contacted K&N and they were no help.

If anyone could please help me, any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

Wasn't there some discussion in the other thread regarding whether the car had been in a front end accident and the radiator support might have been moved back a bit? The CAI tube is being held up too high because it's wedged between the back of the radiator and the ABS module?

I think this is the third thread you've started on this subject, so it's getting very hard to keep track of.

I apologize for the multiple threads, I can go and delete the others.

The radiator support was not moved in the accident. The modifications that the shop made are that they adjusted the metal lines sticking from the ABS module. The tube is no longer being "pinned", as the mount was drilled and it fits pretty precisely to what it should be, AND the actual filter touches the bottom of the undertray.

The problem is not that other threads exist - so don't delete them. The problem is the questions asked in those threads, and your responses to the questions, and the other info you provided are not readily available to someone trying to help you. They don't know what ideas were already suggested.

I am sorry about that. I have decided that this is the only thread necessary to look at in order to help asses the situation. The minor accident in 2001 did NOT move the radiator or support.

Then answer the question I asked in another thread, but you never answered. Is the plastic tube down hard against the bulkhead plate? Not the "actual filter".... the big plastic intake tube?

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

I remember putting a phone book on top of the tube and slowly pushing the hood down on the book until the tube went down into the hole.

Yes, the actual tube is tight against the bulkhead, as it is mounted using its mounting plate.

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

You asked a question in a PM, about the height from radiator, see pics.. Using a level on highest part of the air tube it is 1 inch to highest point of rad shroud (pic 1) and 2 3/4 inches to the rad shroud base (pic 2). Hose clamps screws are about 1/2 inch higher and touch the hood insulation. Looking at your pictures your '97 shroud is different than my '94 so measurements may not be applicable. Distance from the top of air tube to my plastic hood stop near the fuse box is 15/16 inches (no pic)

You don't have ASR, ABS, or traction control, do you?

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

All Z28's have ABS. Traction control was not available in 94.

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

Don't know if this will muddy the waters or clear it up, but as a data point...

My 1997 Z28 has ABS/TCS and my K&N FIPK fits comfortably between the rad and ABS lines. The elbow/snorkel sits down low enough where I have no hood clearance issues, and I have about 3/4 - 1" of plastic to slip the filter over.

The only caveat I'd like to add is that I bought/installed my FIPK in 1998. So while they look identical, perhaps there is a minor design change. Or perhaps I forgot that I had to clearance something. That's doubtful, as I remember specific details about the 3 or 4 transmission changes and half dozen rear end changes on the car... but anything is possible.

Re: Help with hood alignment CAI

Mine is pushed so hard against the brake lines that it bent them a bit.
