The switch is located by the pedal and when the pedal is pressed, a spring loaded plunger pops out.
You can take this out of it's mount and play with the plunger to see if the lights come one. There are 3 pins, I believe. 2 large pins for the "regular" brake lights and a smaller pin for the spoiler brake light. You can use a jumper wire connecting these and see if the brake lights come on. If they do, it's the switch.
Either the switch is worn out (~$11 at Autozone) or the wiring has a break in it. The switch pops apart easily if you want to see how it works and if it just needs cleaning. On autozone.com they list it as a stoplight switch, I think the number is 22584374."
BIG thanks M2004SCMC!!
I popped off the cover above the pedals to find a long white plastic switch with two wiring harnesses on it and a plunger to the pedal.
1. I removed the switch with my fingers carefully.
2. Then I removed the wiring harnesses. You have to insert a screw driver flat head in there to separate the clip from the casing.
3. Then take the box apart with a flat head screw driver.
CAUTION! The spring will shoot out of the hollow tube because the top of the switch case is no longer holding it in place. So don't loose the spring!
4. Then either push up the terminals with needle nose pliers if you can to remove the pieces inside, if not pull the pieces out from the inside. Do this one by one so you don't get everything mixed up.
5. Now each terminal acts like a switch or relay. Clean the little round rivet head mounts that are acting like a switch contact. I just used my flat head screw driver due to the time. Make sure all the metal partials are cleaned off and reinsert.
6. Put the box together with the spring in the tube with the plunger in the switch and reinstall in the car.
Simple... just a pain in the butt trying to get the switch out of the car with the little plastic clips.
Hope this helps you guys! I was in a crunch and worked out quite easy!
My camera is in repair or I would have posted a pic of the switch and its location.
P.S. Shoebox, you should add this to your web site!
