High Capacity Fuel Tank 97 Z/28
Ive got an interesting case here. The last times I filled up my fuel tank I put 17.6 gallons in, the time before that 16.8, and before that 17.2 all at different gas stations. Do I have some kind of bigger fuel tank? It looks stock underneath but I’m not sure.
I know that the early camaros, including mine, have a 15.5 gallon tank stock and the later cars had 16.8 gal tanks.

Check underneath to see if you have a plastic tank, which would indicate the larger capacity. The metal tank would be a silver color, plastic tank black. I have not been able to fill mine up more than about 16.5 gallons (plastic tank) so I am not sure how you are getting over 17. My best guess is that you coasted in on fumes and filled the neck by squeezing the pump until gas came out the cap.
Take the heat shield off under the tank and snap some pics. It should be pretty easy to see if what you have is stock.

I checked, mine is whitish gray but it feels like plastic. The gauge was about a fourth of the way between the Empty and 1/4th mark on the gauge when I arrived at the gas station. And it was not overflowing when I topped it off.

That's not the fuel tank - that's the floor of the hatch compartment. The fuel tank is in front of the hatch compartment, and above the muffler.
Drew has a photo of a plastic tank in this thread:

This is a photo of a small part of the bottom of a stock metal fuel tank. It's the only one I could find in all my photos of my car. Ignore the fitting and the line in the photo - that's added to feed a second fuel pump.

Now that you point it out, I don't have any pics of the tank from under the car, just the ones looking in with the filler neck. I'll grab some pics when I get after the ABS sensor on my rear end, but no promises on time!
