How can I tell if I'm buying a real IROC?

How can I tell if I'm buying a real IROC?
I just ran a carfax report on a 1985 IROC-Z and the report came back:
Year/Make/Model: 1985 CHEVROLET CAMARO
Body Style: COUPE
Engine: 5.0L V8 TPI HO OHV
Fuel: GASOLINE
Driveline: REAR WHEEL DRIVE
Manufactured in: UNITED STATES
Safety Equipment: Active (manual) belts
Standard Equipment: Power Windows Optional, Power Steering, Air Conditioning Optional, AM, Power Brakes, Tilt Wheel Optional, 5-digit Odometer
Can I tell anything by the VIN number of the vehicle and did 1985 IROC Camaros come with 5.0L V8s?? Any help is appreciated.

It will have RPO code Z28 and B4Z for the Iroc package.

Tracy, I have the VIN number, but where can I find the RPO code?

In the center console glovebox.
In 1985 the exterior badges said Z28, not Iroc. Only the door stickers said Iroc. It should have factory fog lights, and Iroc rims as well as ground effects, hood louvers and 3-segment tail lights. In 1985 there was not a center mounted brake light.

Does the RPO code look similar to a VIN number?
What do you mean by 3 segment taillights?
You can already tell I'm in the learning stage right now.

Re: How can I tell if I'm buying a real IROC?
The RPO code is totally different from the VIN. The cars RPO codes will be on a white sticker, probably located in the center console. This is the only sure way to be sure that it is an actual IROC and not a clone. As stated by TABAHR, the exterior badges will all say Z-28 and not IROC-Z. And I can confirm this as fact as a friend of mine had a new 85 IROC in high school back in the day. He removed the IROC-Z door badges and people questioned him about it being an actual IROC. Anyways, if it does have the IROC badges, maybe the previous owner just added them on so people wouldn't mistake it for anything else(?), or maybe its a clone. Check that RPO code and you can see what other options the car has.

3 Segment tail lights have two thin black strips going through them horizontally, creating 3 vertical segments. The older non-Iroc lights had a single thicker strip creating 2 segments.
Welcome to the F-body! I've owned a few nice 3rd gens, and they are great fun. The 3rd generation was all cars between 1982 and 1992.

Re: How can I tell if I'm buying a real IROC?
I don't think there's a big problem with counterfeit IROCs at the moment.
TPI conversion is a fairly involved process. I don't think faking an IROC for resale improvement would really motivate a person to convert a car. The posts above sum it up. Not a huge difference between an IROC and a Z28. Couple years later they merged, and the Z28 ceased production until the IROC licensing agreement expired and the Z28 resumed.
TPI is the key. That's the biggest of all the options. Enjoy the car, later

Sounds good. Where would I find the difference a 1985 IROC offers as opposed to a 1989? I'm refering to upgrades and options and Horsepower. Are the two cars similar enough that you can't tell the difference?

Re: How can I tell if I'm buying a real IROC?
Later cars offered a 5.7 350 TPI with an automatic only. It's about the only significant mechanical change you'd notice from the driver's seat, and would be my first choice of all 3rd gen options.
Carburetion was discontinued in 86 or 87, then all Zs had TPI. Minor ground effects, badging, wheel, engine management, and interior changes. They gained something like 25hp in those years. Each individual car will be different speed-wise because they all have at least one mod by now, and several gear ratios were available. If you park outside, plan on T-tops leaking unless you fu$$ with em. More that do leak than don't. Good luck
