When the leaking exhaust gas put you to sleep in the car while you are driving. That one sure way to know if the system needs replacing. Note: Exhaust systems do not wear out they rust out.

I think that's your dad's way of saying it's too loud.
Regular mufflers have woven fiberglass packing inside (glasspack!) and over time the fiber strands break and blow out the tailpipe. When the packing is completely broken down (usually case rusts out first), the muffler is "worn out" Ever hear of anybody installing new mufflers, then getting on the highway and turning the car on and off to "break them in" with a giant backfire to blow the packing out? I bet your dad has.
You'll know yours is bad when you can stick your finger through the rust hole. Probably won't happen unless you put 200,000 miles on it. Most aftermarket F body exhaust uses acoustic technology instead of glass packing. Good luck putting up with the complaining!
