How important is the abs, is it safe without?

How important is the abs, is it safe without?
I am thinking of removing my traction control on my car and in turn that disables the anti lock brakes. How important is abs? Is this something I will regret since my car is a daily driver. Are there any major drawbacks? Thanks for any help.....

Why would you want to get rid of either of them in the first place?
If you want to get rid of traction control either switch it off or convert it over so that it's "off" when you start the car.
As far as disabling the ABS, it would be the same as driving a car without ABS.........big deal . Don't get me wrong though, ABS IS nice to have.
I'd just leave both of them alone. They might save your butt some rainy night......who knows.

I would leave well enough alone. ABS helps keep alot of us from stuffing our cars into things. Unless you are extremely talanted driver and can modulate brake lock up well in emergency situations, I would leave it be. Besides, what benefit does not having it get you?

For years there have been cars without abs.
However it can get you out of a tight spot now and then.
But usually it just makes people overconfident.
What is more important is a well functioning brake system and tires that are suited to the weather.
For instance, would you rather have nittos w/abs or all seasons w/out when you're driving in the snow.

The ABS in my car has been out for about a year because of the rear I have right now the ABS sensor in the back is screwed. Anyway, it's not a big deal as long as you drive with common sense. I mean when I had ABS in the rain I could just slam the brakes and maintain control but if I do that now I'll just slide around with the tires hydroplaning. You have to modulate the brake pedal a little more, I like it actually increases your driving skills. But a good non-abs story here I was doing like 50 some deer jumps out in front of me I slammed the brakes(no ABS) and dude those tires screeched so loud I stopped pretty good(perfectly dry road) When I stopped I couldn't see anything because of the smoke cloud drifting by, can't do that with abs,

Re: How important is the abs, is it safe without?
our cars have a pretty good abs system so id leave it. however there are other cars with very crappy systems where I know I could stop faster without the abs. But to answer your question, no you can live without it. all abs does is take over when someone panicks and stabs the brakes with all their might. In other words, dont panick

Fort Wayne, IN? Do you drive your car in the snow? I do, and I DEFINETLY need ABS just for that reason.
Also, for insurance reasons, why would you do that? Couldn't your insurance company deny you if you've messed with the ABS by totally removing it?

Perfect example are GM's J bodies (Cavalier/Sunfire) I almost slammed into someone (including sliding through intersections, sliding off the road, ABS failure, almost hitting a tree....) last winter and the winter before in my Sunfire. The ABS systems in these cars are HORRENDOUS! And I use new winter tires! I know it's not just my car either. My mother's 97 Sunfire was the same way. In fact, she wrapped her car around a fire hydrant a few winters ago with my daughter in the car. It's like turining a switch on and off instead of a smooth modulation of brake force.
On the other hand, the traction control on this car is great

Are you sure that you will lose ABS when removing TCS? I unplugged the TCS motor on the valve cover and I still have ABS, I slammed on my brakes on wet pavement to test it and sure enough no skidding. I would first unplug your TCS motor and see what the deal with your ABS is.

If you have ABS you can't do the cool brake stands can you? I'm talking about a rolling one(front wheels locked), or where you're somewhat rolling and then lock the front tires and stop, but rears still spinning. Yes or No?

I've never had a problem doing cool bunouts in the burnout box at my local track
