Re: I want true duals

I went with pacesetter long tube's , a summit universal 3" x-pipe and flowmaster super 40's. They WERE dumped before the axle but then i got tired of the annoying droning sound inside while i went down the interstate, So i had the local exhaust shop (who also cut, bent and welded my x-pipe and mufflers on) and had them run pipe under the axle with 24"x4" chrome tips out the back.
The verdict:
The sound was alot louder and deeper dumped, but don't get me wrong it still sound's awesome.
I paid 160$ so i could have a conversation going down the interstate. It's your desision on that part. If you do go out the back make sure to get 24"x 5" tips.

btw, after you get your car done, take out the back seat, because you cannot haul people in the back w/o dragging on every bump on the road. With just two people it is fine.
If I could do it all over again I would do a y pipe w cutout, a 4" over the axle pipe and then a flowmaster in the place of the stocker. This would have saved me alot of $$ and embarressment (from dragging my mufflers). I would probably have No2 right now.
But i still do love the sound and being the only person im my area w/ true duals and their awesome sound.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: I want true duals

honestly i would not have gone with the flows. Your complaints with the sound, drone in particular, are all related to those mufflers. They make your car louder while decreasing flow. 40's are better for cars with stock manifolds and cats, not that they're all that good to begin with.

Might want to try something a little less obtrusive, like a dynomax ultra flow or a magnaflow 4x11, the latter would be great for a true dual setup. As would Borla XR-1's to a lesser degree. For true duals people tend to go with bullet mufflers or magnaflow single chambers for the most part.

Flowmasters suck.

You'd have picked up more power with some straight-through mufflers like Dynomax Ultraflows.

Re: I want true duals

i just installed some Magnaflow 4x9" straight through mufflers on my duals...

sounds badass.

much quieter than the straigt pipes (duh) but still muscular and deep. and it should flow great still.

Re: I want true duals

I took the long hard way about doing true duals but I also believe it to be the only right way. First off the fuel and brake lines running down the driveshaft tunnel were moved over to under the driver's side rocker (those lines that close to the exhaust just made me feel uneasy). Then to make room for the 2.5" over the axle pipe on the driver's side I pulled the gas tank and notched the corner of it. Now I have true 2.5" duals over the axle and haven't dicked with the suspension geometry and retain full suspension travel without any scraping/banging issues

If you're just lookin for the sound though and arent quite as **** as I, dumping before the axle gives a very nice rumble with the right muffler choice. I was running bullets Before (which I personally loved) but with my new engine (Twin turbo'd & intercooled 3.4 quad cam) I'm just going to let the turbo's do the muffling. Good luck to ya

Re: I want true duals

I have an *INCOMPLETE* set for sale, it's the TSP rumbler set. It is missing one muffler and one clamp, also there are some scratches on the underside of the remaining muffler but nothing serious. I was gonna put some headers on the car and use this set but I decided to save up for a motorcycle instead. anyway PM me if you're interested and we can talk price

Re: I want true duals

From reading all the replies looks as if you have plenty options to pick from. But i still recommend you stay as far away from straight through muffler as you can. The exhaust flows in pulses so when the pulse hits the muffler it expands into the packing and slowes down, while other styles actually form a vacume pulls the next pulse ect..., same idea of H and X pipes. When I changed from bullits to flowmaster it was enough performance differance that a couple friends noticed just from riding in the car so they put them on thier car.

But I still have a pair of bullits with 4" tips welded on if you want them.

Re: I want true duals

i feel like i picked up power when i just installed my magnaflows compared to the straight pipes...and they are straight throughs.

could just be subjective since i now don't mind reving up more....not so worried about cops.

I guess the hundreds of people running T/D's must've really busted their *** to get it to work.
