well the light came on today so I popped the hood and checked it out and everythign seems to be fine. Checked both the dipstick and the radiator and everything is great. So my question is why is the light on??

Don't just unplug the damn sensor. My brother just went through hell because he ignored that god damn light. He had a full coolant flush and it kept over heating. After 2 times overheating the LS1 block was warped along with one of the heads. It was a horrible experience. The problem was a stuck thermostat. So make sure and check it before you go ignorign that light like genius back there sugjested.

Did you check your coolant level while the engine was hot or first thing in the morning when things are cool. I seem to have a coolant leak somewhere and my light triggers when it gets low. When I check it hot, I can only put a little coolant in. But the next day when things are cold, I can really add some coolant to the radiator. All I am saying is, don't just rule it to be a faulty sensor just yet.

Red, didn't he look at the coolant temp gauge? I'd think that he would notice it running hot with a stuck thermostat. I mean to warp the block and 1 head it had to be well into the red.
I agree that unplugging it maybe a bad idea. Replacing it would be better, but since it broken, assuming it is and he's checked the coolant level, anyway I don't think it's going to warn him reliably if his coolant is low. Unpug it if it's a huge annoyance and get it replaced soon. Just keep an eye on your coolant temp. If you are really run low it will run hotter than normal.

Unplug it - it's a POS.
I did on my '99.
In fact, to prove just how good an idea it was (not) , MY '00 it got eliminated.
Dam thing goops up w/ Dex Cool, and it seems like once the gooping starts, it continues.
I went through three during my warranty period - the third is still there, unplugged.
Just do like we have done for years - check the coolant reserve bottle to check your level !
