my car chirps over bumps

I had a 94 convert Z28, chirped, rattled and clunked when you hit anything other than smooth pavement, my 97 t-top aint so bad but it does chirp as well when you go over a manhole cover (closed) or any bump that jars the car. Its under the car, possibly the exhaust system or something, does anyone else have this problem and if so, what did you find?

Paul.

I think most of these cars have that (mine deffinitely does), wouldn't call it too much of a problem, subframe connecters might help.

Re: my car chirps over bumps

The rear springs sit on a metal perch that is welded to the axle tubes on the differential. So there is metal to metal contact there and when you go over a bump, the springs are moving against the perch which makes the chirp. Pretty much nothing you can do short of spray lubing or greasing it. Some have put some rubber hose around the bottom of the spring to eliminate the metal to metal contact.

Another vote for subframe connectors; they do a lot to get rid of annoying squeeks and rattles. Also make sure you LCA bolts are tight; common source for clunking.

So camaros dont come with spring isolators from the factory, Ill try the grease thing and see how that works and if Im ambitious enough Ill do the hose trick, thanks. I guess connectors are on the list of things to do.

Re: my car chirps over bumps

The rear springs have isolators on the top of the springs, but not on the bottom. I have had some luck with grease in quieting it down, but it only helps for a little while. I've had subframes on my car for 2-3 years now, and they do make an overall difference in the car. However, in my opinion and experience they do not help with this particular problem that I am describing.

Spraying them with grease is messy.

Mix up some alcohol and graphite. The alcohol will carry the graphite into the cracks and evaporate leaving a clean, quiet spring. I haven't tried it, but I've heard it works. My car only squeeks a little on bad bumps.
