Re: My Ram Air makes 30hp!!!

you wouldnt think it'd be that hard for someone to dyno a car that has its intake routed to the inside of a wind tunnel. of course, however, the length of the intake would add a variable.

its something i would never waste my time on unless i were paid to do it or something. Not worth the arguement.

its "functional", but just open the hood on one and look at the design. the 'rammed' air pretty much has to make a complete 180 turn inside the hood, that cant be near as efficient as the straight shot versions on the WS6's

Heat Soak alone should have made them rethink that one.
well considering the SS was designed for hi speed performance i really fail to see a problem with heatsoak at those speeds,i can place my hand on my tb after a long cruise since i did the by-pass it does not get near as hot as before!as far as the engineers i am sure the air box was thought out pretty well to make the hood fully functional, for that matter i will say the slp ultra z hood will more than likely function better, like i said i dont have either hood yet.i hate looking under my hood and seeing that fender/coresupport mounted cai, reminds me of a mustang!

its "functional" in the same way the LT1 SS hood is "functional"

I'm pretty sure you would have to put the whole car in the wind tunnel. The air can do weird things around even the slightest bumps and creases in a car's exterior, so the shape of the scoop and how the wind goes around it is critical. Cowl induction hoods actually have a slight ramming affect (again can't prove this, but I've seen the airflow in a wind tunnel) because as the air comes over the back of the cowl it sharply whips back into the inside of the back of the cowl and into the intake. The '80 and '81ish Z28's had these hood scoops with little flippers in the back that opened up at WOT to let cool air in.

Anyway, my point is that there's no way to know what the air is going to do in or around the Ram Air hood scoop without putting the whole car in the tunnel. It sure took me a long damn time to say that didn't it???

not quite... correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure on the LS1 SS the air does a 180 inside the hood, before it goes through the filter... whereas the LT1 is a straight shot to the filter, then a gradual 360

Re: My Ram Air makes 30hp!!!

as far as air in the hood.. theres ALWAYS air in the hood.. when you start moving, the air will be pushed towards the front, though, to the air filter..
So it's not like air literally has to just start at the end of the hood and work it's way to the front--not at all.. there's already air in there, it just needs to be pushed forward by other air.

as far as air temperature.. uh, if your car isn't moving the heat from the engine WILL move to the front of the car.. it'll radiate ******d from the engine.. so it's bound to find its way to the air filter / IAT sensor..

So driving the car.. hood or not will push the hot engine air towards the rear of the engine bay,, and cooler air will be pushed towards the front (through hood and through the airdam or whatnot..)

so i'm sure the SS hood works fine

last time i looked at an LT1 SS induction setup it goes into filter then down then around a 90 then around another 180, the whole way going through an accordian style tube.

contrast this to the LS1 SS, which splits the air into two different ways, goes through a smooth 180 back torwards the front of the car, then another decently smooth 180 back into the airbox.

neither one are 100% perfect, but they both do their job as a CAI setup very well ... which IMHO thats all you can expect with "ram air" without hitting uber-fast speeds.

No, the LS1 ss hoods really don't ram air at all for 2 reasons...

If you were to ever see how the LS1 manages to "ram" air into the engine, you'd agree. it comes it through the scoop, then the scoop splits off into two tunnels that form a 180* turn then come back into 1 piece. The only time it's bringing in air is at high speeds. Triple digits here.

2nd, the intake scoop on the LS1 SS hoods is quite a bit smaller than the LT1 ss, which is taller and wider, and goes straight to the airbox on top of the intake manifold. NO such system on the LS1 versions, they use the factory airbox that you'd see on a z28 or Trans-am. Here's a good idea if you can't picture what I'm talking about:

http://www.blackcamaro.com/snow.htm

After looking at that picture, I'd like anyone to argue how the LS1 SS versions are nearly as effective as the LT1 counterparts.

Even the WS-6 has 2 blockoff plates inside the scoops to prevent a straight shot.

Cold air induction is far more effective than a ram air hood in the LS1 SS's case.

Yup, but these can get removed, either partially (for a daily driver where weather is still involved) or completely (for the weekend warriors that don't see bad weather).

And if completely removed like mine is, it's a pure straight shot...
