A noob question..
Yeah... Nice site!
Anyways, I'm 16 "17" in a few weeks, and my parents were planning on getting me a z28 "98" or above around xmas..
But they called for an insurance quote and it was $517.00 per month for it..
Is this normal for a guy my age? They don't want to pay that much "of course", but I was wondering why it was so high?
I'll probably end up getting a v6 one "around $200 per month?", but jsut want to make sure that that quote isn't suprising anyone..

That's way too much for insurance. Forget the V6 F-Body, it's not worth it unless you're not going to mod. it, but have to have an F-Bod. They're good cars, but will take way too many mods. and money to touch an LT1 or LS1.

Re: A noob question..
High powered V8 vehicle + teen male driver usually = car wrapped around telephone pole. Insurance companies know this, charge $$$$ so they don't lose their keisters on the deal. V6 fbod is much less likely to get you in trouble, but even guys with 4 bangers get peeled off the pavement.

Alright, looks like I will be getting the 6cyl then...
I don't plan on doing any major mods, because I know I would probably regret it in the long run if I did.. lol
Thanks for the posts, nice site also!

Re: A noob question..
I was paying nearly $400 / mth when I was 21 for my '02 Z28! That was full coverage though. It's finally coming down (around ~$225) now. I've got 1 more year 'til the big drop at 25!
I agree there are some dumb young drivers out there, but there are also some sh!tty "older/wiser/experienced" drivers too. I had my '81 Z28 when I was 17 - 18, and I didn't have a problem handling the car or its power. Be SMART with the car and there's no problem. Most of the young (under 20) drivers you hear about cracking up their cars are driving Honda Civics ... seems most street racing accidents involve Hondas .
I know I'm not a perfect driver (contrary to my own belief!) but in all honesty, half of the "dumb" things I've done behind the wheel have had NOTHING to do with speed, and EVERYTHING to do with not paying attention (you know, making a lane change into somebody else's path?). I've caught myself doing crap like that driving my POS winter beater.
To the guy posting this thread, even if you get a V6 Camaro, it's still going to be a fun car to drive, and you can always do mods to them to help with the power, but if you focussed more on suspension mods and such, you could have a real sharp handling car (you should try autocrossing ... it's a blast!. That way you could really improve your driving skills, and then by the time you can afford a V8 car (insurance) you'd be in better shape to handle the car's power.

Re: A noob question..
personally if i had to worry about insane insurance prices, i would just go for the v6 and rebuild the suspension for some BAD *** handling ability.
200hp isn't as much fun as 300hp
but throwing a car around in the curves like a race car....is awesome. not to mention you can upgrade the brakes to help avoid accidents.
maybe look into a good racing school, to learn how to really handle the car.

Re: A noob question..
Thats what I would do and my parents did as well when I got my Fbody in 96 as a freshman in H.S., car was only two years only at the time. Dad put it in his name and was listed as the primary driver and I was listed as a secondary driver. I remeber the insurance being alot cheaper. If you want the car bad enough, maybe you should help out a little with the insurance each month. If you do sports, work in the summer, and use that money to pay during school. Just a suggestion for ya.

Re: A noob question..
As mentioned above, if your parents will let you put the car in their name those rates should drop. Also, ask your insurance company about deductions ie: good student discount, theft deterrent system, airbags, multi-cars, ect. All of this adds up as well.

As said before, have your parents put it in their policy and make one of them the primary driver on it. The rates will suddenly become affordable. Just be carefull, and respect the power. I myself am responsible for sending 1 Z28 to the boneyard wrecked. It's easier to do than you might think it is.

Re: A noob question..
Its also dependent on where you live..
For example, back in 2000, I called up Gieco and theoretically asked, how much would it be for full coverage on 1999 Z28 in Baltimore, MD for a 20 year old male owner and driver.
The lady plugged it in, and got back a quote of $3000 every 6 months.
LMAO!
