Power steering question

I cant figure out if my pass side fluid leak is oil or PS fluid. What would happen if I drained my PS fluid and let the engine run keeping my wheels straight maybe even off the ground. Would I damage the pump or anything? I figure this way I could rule out ps fluid or not.

Re: Power steering question

I wouldn't do that, you might burn the pump up. You can't tell by the color or smell of the fluid?

Re: Power steering question

You will smoke a pump without fluid. Don't do it.

The color is identical to my oil, since the oil is relatively fresh and still light brown.

Shoebox, what if I remove the serpentine belt and run the car off a battery charger?

Keep this simple.

Just take a drop on your index finger and thumb, and you should feel a texture difference between oil and psf. Not to mention the difference in smell.

You could always do a taste test.

Re: Power steering question

Could also be a leak of the A/C system if your car is equipped with A/C. There's oil in the A/C system the the A/C compressor is located right under the P/S reservoir.

The engine will run off the battery for a while, until the reserve capacity is used up.
