it's usualy under the hood on the radiator shroud.
and a bout the thermo. the AC system isn;t ment to reach a certain temp. it;s ment to cool a certain amount lower then ambient temp. you could see as much as 20 degrees difference on the thermostat inside from a colder day to a hot day. so how can that tell you anything relevent? The pressures are the key. There are only a few things that cause the temps not to cool when you have correct pressures but you will notice it by a severe lack of cooling anyway. Sure it's fine if your proud that your thermo is reading 40 degrees... as long as you understand that if it reads 60 or sometims even higher your still ok

This forum used to be used as a 93-97 Camaro/Firebird LT1 Tech forum with the exception of Appearance related items and a couple other things. There are now many more specific forums and the admins would like this forum to be related to the LT1 ENGINE only. Since there are no intake/exhaust forums and the intake/exhaust is pretty much specific to the LT1 and it is like an "extension" of the LT1 Engine, I'm still leaving intake/exhaust type questions here if people choose to post them here. However, it would be a big stretch for me to call the AC an extension of the engine. LOL! I'll move it to the General forum for ya

What you can do with a simple thermometer is compare dry bulb temps at the vent and note inclement conditions. If you drive to work at the same time every day, and the weather is more or less the same on a day to day basis, then you can monitor your system from that perspective. You'll be able to see if the temps are creaping up on you if you're leaking or whatnot. That is relevant, and a hell of a lot simpler than hooking up gauges every day.
That is also why I gave my recently gathered info, including pressures and conditions. There is a hell of a lot more to AC service than dropping in the # of ounces or refrigerant called for in the service manual.
Anyway, happy days and peaceful nights!

Re: Probs with A/C, Experts inside please
I am not trying to threadjack. I am sorry if it seems that way. I just have a quick questions since this is an A/C related thread. Can someone suggest a good thread or book that I could purchase in order to figure out what is wrong with my AC system. My fans work fine, it just doesnt blow cool air. When I turn the AC on I can hear the pressure, like air in a tire, then when i turn it off i can hear it bleed off as if it is turning off, however the AC doesnt work.
Thanks.
Sorry again for threadjacking.

so very many things could be wrong. compressor could be dead and you would neveer know it untill you look at the pressures and see that they have equalized way way high on the low side and way way low on the high side. Pressures are key. you need to start there. once you confirm pressures you can start looking into things like drier, too much oil, recirculation door, blend door etc etc etc. as far as books. There are several AC repair books. I can not recomend any since my expirence and learning has come from the real time field work but I am trying to find a few good ones. If I do I will share the names with you
