Question about motor sizes and names...
The LS1, LT1, etc. are all V8s. 5.7 L. I get that. Where does the 350 come in? I hear people talking about making their 350s 383s and stuff. Is this just a different way of saying they are the same size? I have no idea where to post this, and I have no idea what this all means. Someone help?

Re: Question about motor sizes and names...
LT1 and older engines are 350s which is the amount of cubic inches, a 350 is = to 5.7 liters of displacement. Now when you are talking LS1/LS6 they are 5.7 liters of displacement but are only 346 cubic inches. When people use numbers like 350, 400, 454, 502 its just cubes.

Re: Question about motor sizes and names...
So the liters is the volume inside all the cylinders combined. Is that basically what the cubic inches are too? 350 cubic inches of space inside the cylinders combined?

350 cubic inches , when convereted to metric, is 5.7 Liters(rounded off), the LS1 is 346 cubic inches, same thing, it rounds to 5.7 liters in metric

Wow! That's cool, thanks a lot. I'm trying to pretty much understand cars in general, so where do I post topics about things like this?
Thanks a lot for the info.
BTW, what's the cubic inches for the LS2?

Re: Question about motor sizes and names...
There are 61.02 cubic inches per liter (or so a wise man once told me). And the LS2 is a 6.0 liter motor, so that would put the cubes at about 365 or so. But thats just a rough estimate.

Re: Question about motor sizes and names...
Its GM's progression in cubic inch size since it introduced the First Chevy V-8 in the Fifties starting with SBC 265, 283, 327 and then 350. All with the almost the same bore & stroke. The present day LS1 350 is just the latest version started by that simple 265 V-8 in 1955.

I would still argue that its not even the "latest version started by that simple 265 V-8 in 1955"... And to state it that way is misleading, reflecting on the knowledge base of the original poster. Even you had to change what you wrote, in the quote above
Have a nice day.

262 3.671 bore x 3.100 stroke
265 3.750 x 3.000
267 3.500 x 3.480
283 3.875 x 3.000
302 4.000 x 3.000
305 3.735 x 3.480
307 3.875 x 3.250
327 4.000 x 3.250
350 4.000 x 3.480
400 4.125 x 3.750
if you notice, all three I listed have the same bore OR stroke as the ones he listed
some aftermarket combos you might see/hear about
355 4.030 x 3.480
377 4.000 x 3.750
383 4.030 x 3.750
385 4.040 x 3.750
there are lots more as well, some as large as 427+ cubic inches
