Quiet Exhaust

I have a 383 lt1 with a d1sc blower. The motor has long tubes and low restiction cats. The muffler is a magnaflo and it is loud! I was told the quietist muffler to use is a stock muffler. Has anyone tried this? I have a 2002 SS exhaust I could install but wanted input first. Some people say it wont sound bad and others say I will take a hp hit. I was also thinking about a flowmaster 80 series muffler. I just wanted to get away from loud!

I would love some help if you can.

Thanks...John

Re: Quiet Exhaust

Im running a stock cat-back on my setup and i like it. I also have an electric cut-out that is open most of the time. It sounds good and is quiet enough to have a conversation with someone, weather they are in the car or lined up at the light. Makes for a great sleeper too.

This maybe a stupid question but what exactly does that mean?

Re: Quiet Exhaust

Thanks for the replys.

(Taintedz28)....Any idea how much power loss with the stock system?

(LT1POWR)......Does the stock system sound the same as it did before the hearer install or did the headers liven up the sound levels?

Thanks for the help

Re: Quiet Exhaust

Decisions, decisions! Since I have the 02 factory cat back I will probably try that first since it was free. The part number on the muffler is 997144. It is the same as the one on my 02 CETA. My buddy has the 80 series flowmaster #53083 on his GTA with shorties and it does not sound too bad. I am gradually correcting everything that is annoying me about my car as it sits now. If I cant get it the way I want it then someone else can have a supercharged 25th anniv TA and I will start with an LS1 car. Thats what I miss in my 25th as opposed to the 02 I have.....Turn the key,It starts,I drive...end of story!

Thanks again for the help everyone.

Re: Quiet Exhaust

I like my Dyno Max catback, it pretty mellow in tone, but you can make it bark with a down shift or a quick romp on the gas. How ever I think I would try a bullet inline first. They are cheap, then if it's still too loud you could off-it to some one else to offset the cost of a new set-up. I wouldn't go back to stock, why, there are too many better systems out there, so you keep your ponies and your hearring!

Re: Quiet Exhaust

Thanks IROC-T. I dont want to loose alot of power but I cant stand the way my car sounds now. For now the stock system is free. That will give me a chance to seach out and listen to some other fbodys till I find something I like. The GM Nats is this coming weekend so I will have lots to choose from.

Re: Quiet Exhaust

I actually did back to back dyno runs with the cutout open and then closed through the stock catback. I dont think i lost much if anything, but im only makeing 265 hp so im sure you would loose a little at your power level.

I am attempting to get with Bryan from pcmforless to do some dyno tuning. I installed the stock muffler and tail pipes yesterday and it did quiet the car down alot....maybe too much but I asked for quiet so I cant bitch much.

I will still look for another muffler but now I can take my time. If I get to the dyno and it is down on power I can just disconnect the intermediate pipe and away we go. Supposedly the factory sytems dont kill you too bad these days. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Quiet Exhaust

I thought there were silencers you could buy and put in the exhaust tips. I think I read something about that when I got my Magnaflow Catback, there are holes in the bottom of those tips and I was sure that's what they are there for.

Holes in the bottom of exhaust tips are so that the water can exit the tips before rust forms.
