Rear Wheel Bearing Question

Hi,

ive a question again.

My rear wheel bearings on my 1999 Z28 have tollerance. If i try to move the rear wheels vertical, i can hear a knocking. Its not to mutch but the german technican tells me, i have to change it.

So my question: Are these wheel bearings on the rear axle adjustable or must i buy new ones?

I didnt find rear wheel bearings in shops, only the front hubs.

Help will be great, i order next time all the stuff i need in the USA.

THX!

The rear wheel bearings are a lot cheaper than the front hubs.

Around here we can get them for about $10... Here's a link with a picture...

http://www.partsamerica.com/productd...pe=186&PTSet=A

The front ones are easier to replace though....

Thank you for this information.

The only thing i have is a exploded view of the axle, where i cn see, that i must remove the axle from the differential.
I didnt find any tutorial about that but i not know, if this bearings are adjustable.

How hard to change is that?

No adjustment to bearings. They are roller bearings that rest on the axle. After you pull the axle, you may find that it is the thing that is worn and needs to be replaced (replace bearing, too).

Hey guys, thank you for your replys.

There is problem:

1. I cant find the number of my axle. In the GM Papers are written, that it will be pressed at the passenger side in front direction. But there is nothing to see. Then i take a look at every other side and no number so far.
Put of the wheels and take a look at the top of the axle?

Summit teels me, that theay will need the translation of my axle to sell the right bearings and seals. Where do i find that number?
My Camaro is 99 Z28 i think California Options.

2. Next question to SHOEBOX: What do you mean with that? Do you think maybe the thin Axle is worn? I allready drive 90.000km with that car i cant realy belive.

3. Is anywhere a tutorial out there how do i change that bearings? Here in germany no one knows

See if you can order a factory service manual (Helm) or at least a Chilton's manual. If you want, I can scan the 5 pages in the Chilton's manual that tell you how to swap out the rear axle bearing, and e-mail it to you.

They used the same basic rear axle setup in the F-Body's for 20 years. It wouldn't surprise me if they used the same rear axle bearings. You shouldn't need to get a part #, they should be able to figure out the replacement part from the year of the car. Summit wouldn't be my first choice for buying a routine replacement part.... they are more "performance" part oriented. You may need to just find a local GM dealer, and ask them for help. Any GM dealer can access the parts for any GM car.

THX,

if its not do mutch work, ill be verry hapy, if you can scan these 5 pages for me.

My choice to take summit is the reason, that its out from germany a big shop where i will be safe with delivery and payment options. When i browse in the www ive not found any other big shop witch looks ok.

Im far away from america and i can only learn the things, the community is writing.

If you have tipps for me witch shop are good and safe too, then ill verry interest.

Thank you for help!

But there are GM auto dealers in Germany. Their parts department will have access to parts info for all GM vehicles. Generally, GM parts are very expensive through GM dealers, but if they can sell you the part in your currency and deliver it without all the international hassle, it might be the simplest way to go.

I'll scan the manual pages on Monday and e-mail them to you.

According to GM Parts Direct.com the axle bearing part #12471606 and the axle seal #26029139, for a 1999 Camaro. They don't ship out of the US, but I think Injuneer is correct. Find a local CHevrolet dealer and get them through them.

I also agree with Shoebox, you're probably going to find the axle eaten away where it rides on the bearing. I've almost never seen one with play that I can feel that wasn't trashed. The axles are much more exspensive and there are two different ones depending on if the car has traction control or not. You won't know for sure until you get it apart, but the odds are very high. At least check price and availablity on the axle before you pull it apart. That way you know how much and how long it will take to get the axle if you need it.

THX for replys.

In Germany the GM Dealers dont have big knowledge. They tells me, i must replace my whole axle... Nothing to have assurance.

The rest of GM or Chevrolet Dealers are Opel and old Korean Deawoo. No North American GM, thats the difference. Hard to explain that.
Sometimes i need a new Windshield for my Camaro and i bring it to a GM Dealer who sell US-Cars. There they crack my plastic covers under the wipers and break my wipers too (they try remove) and tells me i must pay for it.. Ive made a plaint to the management and they stop bulsh***ing. The windshild was payd by my insurance...
At a later time i crack my right mirror and the same dealer drive with my car in the repair halls and i hear a big scrape... They scratch my front bumper on the lifting ramp...

And addentional to al that, they have prices it will be the 2 till 3 of that what the parts cost in america.

So the result is: They can sell US-cars but repair, knowledge and reliability... Nothing!
The next dealer for US-GM is 300km amay from me and is only interest on money.. Next wrong way.

The only chance is do by my self.

The GM dealers in Germany sound just like the GM dealers in the US

I'm copying the manual for you, and will e-mail it in about 15 minutes.
