Royal Purple oil?
#16
calm down boss....
i have actually seen the show a few times...reruns...and i don't recall them ever saying what oil was in it prior to the RP...and more importantly...how old the oil was.
and again...it's a sponsor driven TV show...of course they're gonna find hp in everything that they do.
the show has some good aspects. but some of what they do is pathetic. like using a handheld programmer to tune a fully rebuilt, heads/cam LS1 engine. i mean come on.
or when they spent $300 for a set of bigger injectors for a stock LT1...and i think they even used the hypercrap to tune that also.

Although i can't speak for the LS1 my parents ran mobil 1 in their 97 maxima for years and you'd hear always alittle valvetrain noise and some werid top end knockish sound on startup. They tried royal purple and no valvtrain noise and no noise on startup. Also ran it in my previous 3000vr4 vs syntec, i know its not a direct comparison but all experiences i've had with it has been nothing but great.

RP is poop..
and just so ya know.. even with 5K miles on all the fluids (or more) there was no change in going to fresh.. (I tested by running the car on the dyno, moving it over 3 bays to drian and refil with fresh fluids then running again.)
Perhaps on a highly modded car the minute % may be realized as a whole number but on a stock car, nothing. the numbers were identical. (Gotta love having a car that can dyno and put down the same numbers repeatedly..)
#1 reason I wont ever use RP? residue..

but but...joe elmore on HorsePower TV said so!!!
sorry had to...
so why is residue so bad with RP...can't say ii've ever researched the stuff...why is it any worse than other oils??
curious

I think this would be fine for a TRACK CAR. But for a daily driver i think it'd be a waste of money.

Motor Oil
Why is Royal Purple superior to other motor oils?
Royal Purple outperforms synthetic and conventional oils due primarily to its proprietary Synerlec® technology, and due to its superior synthetic base oils. Synerlec significantly increases oil film strength to dramatically reduce friction and improve combustion. This translates into more horsepower and torque, improved fuel economy, and reduced wear, heat and emissions.
What kind of performance gains can be expected?
Multiple independent university and automotive industry testing has documented these typical performance gains:
* Horsepower and torque increases up to 3%.
* Fuel economy improvement up to 5% or more.
* Reductions in emissions of 20% or more.
* Reductions in heat of up to 12%.
* Reductions in wear of up to 80%.
Performance gains will vary depending on the type of vehicle, its condition, and the way it’s driven. Visit the independent test summary page to view specific test results.

GRanted they did basic maintenance on this one..

What is the most efficient oil to run on an LS1 (90k miles)
I'm thinking about going with Mobil1 or Castrol Synthetic.
What is the standard, here?
My LT1 bud runs 5weight or 0weight Castrol.
Just looking for pointers before I drop the oil.

Since journal bearing and other clearances are fixed on a given motor, there are only two ways an oil can have a positive effect on horsepower:
1) Increase in lubricity.
2) Decrease in viscosity.
As compared to Mobil 1, there is no way RP has that much of a higher lubricity coefficient to net 15 horsepower, if it actually is higher at all. As far as a decrease in viscosity is concerned, compare 5/30 to 10/40 oil of any brand at the same conditions, and the thinner (5/30) will net better mileage and more horsepower. The RP claims are clearly a case of ambitious marketing.
For a long trip, a fresh oil change of any brand will be fine. A long trip is the best condition for both the engine and oil. The harshest conditions would be many starts and short trips in cold conditions.
I used to use Mobil 1 all the time in my LS1, until one day I redeemed a coupon at the dealer for a free oil and filter change. After that oil change, my very minor case of piston slap on cold starts, that the car had since new, was gone. I went back and asked the dealer what oil they used, and he told me they used 5/30 Valvoline conventional oil. Since that time, I continue to use conventional oil and the piston slap is gone for good.

What is funny to me is how people will compare Used oil just before it is changed to new oil..
Was the used oil breaking down and making more noise from the engine and now, the fresh oil makes it all better? WOW.. who would of thunk it!
As for the conventional oil and piston slap.. Thats fine and dandy but the sounds from my engine dont bother me unless they are weird and out of place... So, I would rather keep my 7K+ mile oil changes than go to conventional.
Residue - many of my friends own shops and thus race cars.. Those cars and the cars of their clients are the ones they have seen the purple dye as a residue on the parts.. Unless their dye is the most slippery substance known to man, I dont see how a residue will HELP anything you are trying to coat so you can cool it down and lube it..
In the end, its your car and your choise to believe what you want about any product that may be on sale. We can only provide our .02¢ and hope that it helps..
By the way...

I used Mobil 1 pure synthetic for 1-2yrs then switched to Valvoline 5/30 the past 3yrs......dino style
#28
if you put the rp in the diff coolant and engine like i did you should see a hp increase of about 4-5 but no more than that, the oil in the black camaro on hp tv had synthetic prior to change but i couldnt find anything about how much miles were on that oil before the change.

I just loaded some Castrol 0w30 into my LS1 TA, it makes a huge difference. I suppose the old oil was a bit old, but it still held together well.
However, my oil pressure went from ~25 PSI idle to ~40-60
Which is a good thing to me. Too much lube is almost enough.
I'm using castrol from here out. However. 38$ for oil FTL =(

Dude, did you watch the show?? Obviously not,b/c they did dyno the car BEFORE ANY ROYAL PURPLE OILS WERE PUT IN. Its been a long time, but I think the car actually did have Mobil 1 in it before the switch.
Oh yea,the tornado commercial DID NOT HAVE A DYNO GRAPH showing it made power, atleast I never saw a commercial with dyno results posted.
How do I know a $2 quart of cheap gas station oil wouldnt give power? B/c someone wouldve already found out about it,and it wouldve already been a big deal.
Im not saying AT ALL that by putting Royal Purple in your car, your gonna get a SOTP feel...BUT,I do believe it wouldve given the car noticable HP on the dyno.
For the record,I have it in my car and I did notice the engine noise a little quieter but I dont know if it made it any faster b/c I was doing alot of carb tuning while running it.
