Taking apart an alternator?

Taking apart an alternator?
I am in the process of taking apart a used alternator to send the halves out to be powdercoated. I am then going to take the powdercoated halves and put the guts of a rebuilt upgraded alt (0 miles) into them. The problem with the rebuilt upgraded alt is that the case is cracked off at the mounting hole closest to the engine. My problem is is that I can't get the halves separated from the center section? I have removed all visible screws and the fan/pulley/electric connectors. I tried beating on the stator w/ a rubber mallet a few times and they won't budge? Am I missing something? Suggestions welcomed. Thanks. Jeff

Yes, they should just pull apart. Whyle you are in there, you could replace the brushes. If you didn't already know, when you reassemble the ALT push the brushes into place and use a paperclip to hold them in there until you get the halves back together .

I ended up puting it in gear with the belt on, wraping the belt in a rag, pinching it onto itself with a vice-grips and using a breaker bar on it. I'm sure your way would be easier.
