will 410s last in my 10 bolt? or would 373's be the best way to go?
i want to put some 410s in my z, but i heard that they wont hold up in a 10 bolt to well? i like to have fun w my car, but i dont rag on it all the time, my rear end was rebuilt about 4-5 months ago, i would really like to have 410s over 373's but i also dont want it to break on me and i dont have $$ for 12 bolt, what do u guys think, 410s? , or 373's?

The first time I really got on my 10 bolt with 4.10s (strange gears, ARP studs, Zexel posi, TA stud girdle etc..) it blew chunks. On street tires too.

4.10s will break just like any other gearset, the only difference is the number of teeth on the ring gear & the pinion. Two things to remember are that the installation is very important for the life of the gears, and drivetrain shock usually damages the rear more than torque does. In other words, the more power and traction you have, the nicer you have to be to your 10 bolt, and at a certain point you'll want to upgrade because you just have to be too nice to it. I'm surprised I haven't broken anything yet on my rear, but I guess my guess the gears in my car had a fairly easy life till a few thousand miles ago when my car told me that it would rather have me shift on my own.

If you don't mind, how much did the conversion cost you? Also, what internals did you use on the clutch, stock or aftermarket? Thanks.

NO
No
NO
They will not.
If you put 373 OR 410 or 456 whatever, you will regret it.
Besides, they are not worth it.
This is all on my stock motor lt1..(just headers etc boltons...) I dynoed 301 rwhp and ran 12.94@110mph with stock 3.42s.
Then i got a good deal on some brand new 410s. had them professionally installed, now i ran 13.3 at 103 mph. all it really does is make 1st and 2nd really easy to spin, thats all.
Well shortly after...about 500 miles there broke.
So i was talked into some 373s...slightly better but still not as fast. they broke.
Then i went back to my stock 80,000 mile 342s and broke the torsen...i bought a new torsen and have been using the stock gears for another 20,000 miles.
Also like to mention i now have double the hp i had from my earlyer dyno.
Yes there maybe few ppl who like them cuz they can now spin there tires when before the could not, but big deal, i dont like wheelspin.
Stock 10bolts are junk, got to a 9'' with 342s
Or you can try the 10 bolt gears jobs like me and end up paying as much for repairs and new gears as you would if you bought a 9''

go with 4.11s
they are 9 ring 37 pinion
this makes them stronger than either 3.73s or 4.10s
that is one gearset that will probably last longer than any besides the stock 3.42s

how can only 9 on the pinion make is stronger then 11 on both the 373 and 342s???
better check your thinking there buddy.
btw 4.11 and 4.10 are the same, people just dont round right with the 10 bolt for some reason.

second, 4.10s are 10 ring 41 pinion (41/10= 4.10) and 4.11s are 9 ring 37 pinion (37/9= 4.1111 repeating 1, which rounds off to 4.11)

11 is stronger then 9 becuase there is less force per tooth. btw, the pinon in the 4.11s are about 1/2 the physical size of the 342s. the teeth are bigger on the 342s. more proof..the ring gear on 4.11s is about twice a think as the ring gear on 3.42s, the teeth are the same, but its thinker on 4.11 becuase the pinion is smaller.
I have personally had 342s and 411s side be size many times.

Mine have been fine, although I dont even know exactly what mine are (bought it that way). On the other hand its not like im torture testing them... everytime i do something I have the good old ten bolt in the back of my mind. I think the main thing is not to be violent with the clutch pedal when you want to have some fun.

Just a little break down on GM gear ratios:
2.73's = 41 teeth on the ring / 15 on the pinion
3.42's = 41 (ring) / 12 (pinion)
3.73's = 41 (ring) / 11 (pinion)
4.10's = 41 (ring) / 10 (pinion)
4.56's = 41 (ring) / 9 (pinion)
Do the math (41 / 15 or 12 or 11 or 10 or 9) = the ratio stated. Now there ARE true "4.11's" which are, as previously stated, 37 (ring) / 9 (pinion). I'm not sure who makes them though? (maybe Strange? ). As far as I'm concerned, I believe that they should be stronger since on the same diameter gear (ring gear, in particular) there are less teeth, yet the same size gear, meaning each tooth is thicker, and thicker = stronger IMO. Sure the pinion itself maybe a little smaller due to only having 9 teeth, but isn't it usually the ring gear that'll break teeth before the pinions do anyways!?
BTW: if you don't believe me about the # of teeth, check Richmond's site for confirmation. Oh, and I've personally counted them myself as well, and yes, I do in fact have 4.10's, not 4.11's "rounded" to 4.10.

Re: will 410s last in my 10 bolt? or would 373's be the best way to go?
Like others have said, in the 1/4 mile, the 4.10 gears are only going to help you up to about 35 mph. From then on, the 3.42's would be slightly faster.
For driving around town, they will feel faster because the TQ is multiplied in each gear more, but you run out of gear much sooner in speed. So you have more TQ for less mph in each gear.
If I change gears, I'm only going with a 3.73, but never to the 4.10. I have a hard enough time with traction with the stock 3.42's, and that's with 275/40-17's.
