'01, '02 Z28 stock exhaust poll

Did your '01, '02, Z28 come stock with a Z28 a exhaust (Y pipe off of manifold into single cat, 3" pipe back to muffler) or "SS" exhaust (dual cats coming off the manifolds, flattened Y pipe converging near rear axle)? This poll is NOT for SS owners. They would obviously have the SS exhaust. I recently found out that some of the regular Z28's have been fitted from factory with SS exhaust systems. I have one. The purpose of this poll is to find out how frequent/rare this occurance is.

thats not ss exhaust, hate to burst your bubble but thats factory exhaust for all the ls1's... the went to a dual cat system with the 97's. and all have the flattened y pipe which is actually not good.

If you are right, I need to give my dealer a call and have the service center educated. I have had a message on this board for 2 days, no one having a clue what I am talking about describing the exhaust system I have. What kind of data do you have proving this to be stock?? If this is the case then EVERYZ28 "bolt on" cat back system I have seen listed for a '98 to '02 Z28 (ie. borla, corsa, slp....) will NOT work!!!

he is right and yes the bolt on catbacks do work..

1995 for california models and 96-97 LT1's have the dual cats on the y.
the Ls1 is similar in its exhaust setup with dual cats.

Silver - all of them come with dual cats - the confusion in your situation is the H- or crossover-pipe you mention in your other post. If I'm reading your description right there, I've *never* seen what you're talking about (that is: a crossover pipe connecting each arm of the 'Y').

Get a pic of that up...
good luck,
Shane

Because its not a SS exhaust. Its just the stock LS1 exhaust, dual cats. Both Z28 and SS come with 2 cats.

Again, ALL Z28's & T/A's have 2 catalytics...................even my buddy's '96 T/A has "SS" exhaust.

there are some complete morons at dealerships. Remeber when i went to test drive a 2001 TA and the sales man told me it had a supercharger. I smilled, said, "realy" then i got to test drive it . Seems like it is so much easier sometimes to get what you want by playing stupid . Since 97, they have had 2 cats, maybe even 96. I know for sure the 93-95 z's have a single cat, and that is the only time they have done that, i have gutted the cat on a 95 z, a 93 z, and a 94 SS, all with one cat. The only difference between the ss exhuast and the z28 exhaust is tips and muffler. The only time you will find differences, is by year models. And yes i do have 2 cats in my Z with the mashed y, why you may ask, b/c all LS1's have that.

Thanks, guys. Now that I feally totally stupid, but well informed... What is the best place for a cutout? The driver's side pipe is flattened so I can't do one there. The passenger pipe is not flattened, but wouldn't it be wierd to put a cutout on just the passenger side pipe?? (it is 2.5'' round pipe). Any tips would be appreciated. I am thinking about just taking it to a muffler shop and having a custum dump done at the 90 degree bend into the muffler.

i wouldn't put it at the y, it would resonate pretty bad in the car. You can find thm pretty much anywhere. try www.thunderracing.com , if i were you i would get an electric one. most people put them right before the muffler inlet.
