130 mph rattling

130 mph rattling
On my way to school today I saw a Z06 when I was on the on ramp. I went after it. I stuck him all the day to 130 because there was a nasty rattle on my driveline. I have 4.10's, the reason I say this is because it came from the differential./. Em' not supposed to go that fast on 4.10's.
I was whooping his *** too but had to let off....

If you we're whooping his ***, he was just toying with you.... or there's something you're not telling about your car. A Z06 traps high 11_s stock.
That rattling is your car telling you not to go that fast on public roads.

And yes, a Z06 shouldn't have any trouble with a Camaro that traps 106.
Rattle or vibration?
There's no set speed that you have to stay under with 4.10s.

Re: 130 mph rattling
Could be a number of things. An out-of-balance driveshaft is the first thing to come to mind.
How about your tranny mount.....is it original? Have you replaced it with a poly mount?? I put an Energy Suspension mount into my car (got bored, something to do) and I'm probably gonna pull it back out one day.....boy, does that thing ever make the car vibrate (BUT, only at a couple certain speeds, and it's consistantly always at the same speed/RPM).
If the sound is "rattling", are you 110% sure your exhaust system is all tight? Lets just say under normal driving, maybe it's fine, but when you're blasting the car at WOT and doing ~130 mph, maybe a combination of wind and flexing from the motor was causing the exhaust to hit the body or part of the suspension somewhere along the length of it?
.....these are just a few possibilities.

Re: 130 mph rattling
I dont think he asked for people to break his *****. Ive gone 140 on a public road, a bridge no less. Damn me to hell i guess. So unless you want to answer the question dont answer at all. If you still have the stock driveshaft with 4:10s then that is definatily the problem. Get an aluminum driveshaft and it will go away. If not then you might be out of alignment, the tires might be out of balance, or you might be low on air on one of them. I seriously doubt its a bent axle and you know if you have f ed up your rims to the point where they might be bent. Well if its a rattling and not a vibration then its probably the exhaust hitting.

Re: 130 mph rattling
Your LS1 M6 should already have an aluminum driveshaft. Maybe just find a shop who can check the balance, and re-balance it if necessary.
The only LS1's w/o an aluminum shaft were A4's w/2.73's (steel shaft). An A4 w/3.23's got the aluminum one, along with all the M6's.

But seriously, the main things to look for at those speeds are tire balance and DS balance. Usually if it was the tranny or engine you'd feel it at normal highway speeds since they only operate in a set rpm range. I'm not sure about your area, but here in florence there's a company that specializes in driveshafts of all types called "Meco" or "Meeco" (can't specifically remember the name)... i went there before switching to the M6 to see if they would work with flywheels (which they didn't). Cool equipment they have in there though. Get the balance checked on your tires first then search around to see if you have a similar company in your area that can check the balance on your DS, and re-balance it if neccessary. If that isn't it then all i can think of is some kind of aerodynamic vibration... you wouldn't happen to have some kind of ground effects kit or high spoiler would you?

Re: 130 mph rattling
You might check your torque bar. I had mine recently replace b/c it was breaking at the differential. When I took it out, the bolts were very loose. Something else the previous owner did that I found out about...
My car had a bad vibration the first time I got on it. It was about 4 months after I bought it. Only 50 bucks for a new torque bar.

Re: 130 mph rattling
Seems he would notice a constant noise if the torque arm was coming apart not just at high speeds. Its going to be handling more torque at lower RPMs anyway so the stress wont be as great at 130mph. But if you paid $50 for a torque arm we might not be talking about the same part. I dont know what a torque bar is.
