383sb Questions...

This might sound stupid, but I am thinking VERY long term here. When I get to the point that I can no longer mod a stock bottom end LS1, I was thinking of going the 383ci route. What's the displacement on the LS6 Block? (cu in)

I want to have a short block built to withstand boost and a small shot of laughing gas. I was thinking of boosting it up and adding a small shot (50-75hp) of nitrous to help further cool down that intake charge.

What are the safe boost levels of a built 383? Will the LSX intake swap over? Head sizes? Again I am treading in unfamiliar territory.... I don't really want to end up buying parts for the LS1 that I can't use on this motor. (-Waste of $$) I'm not worried about the drive line for now, I'll take care of that when I have the money handy for the motor.

Am I missing anything else??

Thanx in advance.

Re: 383sb Questions...

The LS1 and LS6 engines are virtually identical (the bore & stroke dimensions are the same). The LS6 block has different casting and venting between chambers or something like that. In general, the LS6 block is considered "better" than the LS1 block, but I'm sure the differences are marginal.

There's no difference adding boost to a stroker (383) motor than any other engine. All you have to consider is the compression ratio of the engine ... if you plan to super/turbo-charge the engine, and THEN spray N2O, you'd want to leave the CR in the 8.5:1 - 9.0:1 range, tops (basically, this is dependent on the pistons you use, and the chamber size of the heads). The stock ~10.2:1 ratio CAN take SOME boost, but only around ~6 psi from what I've read, and then you're risking hurting things. If you build a motor for boost, you can run much more boost and get the most out of it.

What I might recommend for heads are a set of 6.0L truck heads ... I can't remember if they're the "LQ4" or "LQ9" heads, but they have similar (or identical ) ports as the LS6 heads, but the have larger (~72 cc, I believe? ) chambers, which would lower your static compression over stock ~68 cc heads.

Re: 383sb Questions...

The LS6 is pretty much an LS1 block.

I'd go with an LS2 block if I were building a stroker motor.

The LSX intake manifold will fit to the LS1/LS6 block.

If I were going FI and needed to lower compression, I'd go with the big CC Dart Pro-1 or AFR heads.

Max boost for a built motor? 20+ psi.

Mike
