Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

Ok, I just spoke to my friend and he said that the guy build ing this motor for him spoke to GM directly, they told him It can be done and gave him all the parts needed He said they wanted to sell him their NASCAR heads for it but they are a bit pricey. I guess we'll see it it hit 500 @ the wheels or flywheel. I tried to help him and warn him about the weak parts ie tranny and rear. but I guess we'll see.

He's ganna blow his rear end into a nice smokey puree!... Suspension, Drivetrain?... He could have 600 HP but only 400 would be recieved by the wheels. I say biuld up the weaker parts in the motor, transmission, and suspension before trying to squeeze power out of the LS1 with 5K and be completely broke when he smokes his Transmission...

He can DEFINATELY IMO get 500 HP with $5K but it DEFINATELY won't be reliable / streetable until he fixxes the weak links, go for the weak links first THEN biuld up a fast car.

NASCAR heads? lol They won't work with the lsx family.

Maybe he meant the C5R heads.

Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

Well, I am the guy with the 2002 SS (automatic) 500HP did not happen, not even close. I had the mechanic check out articles and such for about 3months. I put in Patriot 5.3 stage 3 heads, 585/585 - 276, 226intake, 226exhaust cam, 36lb injectors, Redman LT's, SLP exhaust, 373 gear, 3000 stall convertor, transco shift kit, and tranny cooler. Livernois in Dearborn hts did the tuning. PCMforless did the initial tuning and completely f---ed it up. NEVER USE PCMFORLESS!!! I am only making 353 to the wheels on a Mustang dyno. I am very dissapointed. The best time so far on a 95 degree day was ET12.52 at 110.5. I ran about $1000 over budget due to PCMforless screwing it up and would not refund anything. In fact he said there is something in my car that is broken.
Anyway, I am having issues with the car not shifting correctly so Livernois is going to retune it. I am not completely out of money, but the mechanic said "do not waste your money on trying anything more". I am not really too interested in N20. I just wanted to give you all an update.
Thanks for your comments. Mike

Mike,
What kinda problems are you having with shifting? I think you could have went with a bigger cam, that seems kinda small for what you were try'n to do.

Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

good lord...226 is a small cam if you were hoping for 500hp.

i'm making close to 400 at the wheels and i have stock heads!!! i currently have a 233 cam.

and in 5yrs, you are the first complaint i have heard about bryan at PcmForLess....sounds like something else is wrong. i mean that heads/cam setup isn't all that difficult to tune, i can't beleive he would mess it up in any way.

if you wanted 500hp at the wheels you should have been looking at close to a 240deg cam with a ton of lift.
good heads (stg 3 are probably overkill and hurting power) and a 226 cam would probably net you about 400 to the wheels tuned

sounds like your missed goal is your fault, or the mechanics fault for bad cam reccomendations...

agreed. sounds like the setup wasnt very well thought out.

and plus..your trying for 500 rwhp on a MUSTANG DYNO! haha. your going to need about 560-580 rwhp on a dynojet to get close to that number on a mustang dyno.

353 at the wheels on a mustang dyno is much higher on a dynojet. my car went on a dynojet..put down 267 SAE. on a dynojet..with no changes, 310 SAE.

Agree with both previous statements. Instead of having your mechanic check out articles, you should have at least picked up the phone and called some shops that build a lot of LS1s or just gone to them instead of messing around with a mechanic that didn't know. YOU should have done more research. Never heard of Redman headers either....

I think hp goals suck anyway. Look at your converter. It's costing you hp on the dyno, but who gives a rats a$$ when it makes you run quicker?

haha..building engines based on magazine articles...

ahh well..on a dynojet im sure his combo is pretty close to 400 rwhp. im sure running in 95 degree heat, plus humidity, plus who knows what elevation, caused the low mph..not to mention the shifting issue. 400 rwhp for an auto is pretty stout.

Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

I put Longtubes Y-pipe and catback with a racetronix fuel pump and a 150 shot on a bone stock 01 WS6. All about $2300 bucks and put down 453hp and 530 ft lbs. Money well spent IMO

With a lid, cat back and used TNT wet kit jetted at 150, I was putting down 474 RWHP and 531 RWTQ. 326 RWHP and 341 RWTQ on just the motor.

Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

Not nearly enough camshaft in the car, also what size converter is in it? What other bolt ons does the car have.

Lets get the whole "tale of the tape" on the car.

Re: 500 HP to the wheels?

To take a guess, I'd say too big of heads and injectors and too small of a cam. His trap speed was only 110, so even with the crappy air, I don't think he is at 400rwhp. What size valves? What compression? What convertor? Just trying to help and good luck.

Livernois did my tuning as well. I have the same problem with the shifting as you. My cam is a lot smaller than yours (221/221) and i'm putting down 360 on their mustang dyno. My best run to date (out of 2) is 12.4 at 113. Except for the shifting problem, car runs pretty solid.
