I've noticed that unless you match the revz spot on you get a bit of a grinding noise going into 3rd from 6th when double clutching. Otherwise it almost sucks into 3rd gear without a sound.

I have one question though. The time it takes to match revs double clutching I probably could have down-shifted to 3rd while keeping the revs up much faster. How fast can everyone else do this?

Youve just got to practice.

I throw my car into 3 on occasion when i am going about 70. At sixty you could probably throw it into 2nd but you will be up close to the limiter. That was when i had my stock gears, with 4.10's i usualy don't like to throw it into 3rd but it is possible.

You guys are nuts putting it in 6th gear at 45mph.I dont use 6th unless i am doing 75mph.In 6th gear @45 you are lugging your engine,in other words pounding your bearings to death.I bet my motor last a lot longer than yours.

As he said, he didn't know, thats why he asked, In other words he didn't know. So keep it above 1200 rpm's, i know it's hard to do when your criusing with the monsoon blaring but try to keep an eye on it.

Don't put your car in 6th at 45 unless your going downhill or going totally flat. Honestly..just keep it in 5th the difference in gas mileage is minimal, and you have all that extra power to prevent lugging (kills the motor).

In the ls1 it pulls to the revlimiter in every gear, so personally if you are doing around 60mph in 6th or 5th..i say push clutch in, rev it to 5,000rpm+ or so (while your doing this your already on your way to 2nd gear), Let go of clutch and romp on it..This will save your driveline..other than just throwing it in gear..That chirp you hear without matching revs on a downshift is not what you want to hear..believe me.

Have fun and take it easy.

I've been driving a stick for years, and the best advise is this: Don't try any thing stupid unless you are ready to pay for it. Meaning, don't get crazy unless you know what you are doing, and are experienced enough with your shifting.
Also know where your speeds are when you shift. For our cars, the max speed you can go in a certain gear is as follows.
1st = 49 mph
2nd = 72 mph
3rd = 99 mph
4th = well if you are going faster than this you diserve a ticket.

I'm Just learning manual, i got me a 98 z28 with a 6-speed and i go about 40 in 3rd gear some times i go up to 4th gear on the bigger roads, since this is also my first time having manual, i also have so/so starts in first gear, sometimes its smooth and sometimes its ruff and almost stales, i just figured out i have to have it around 2,000 rpm to atleast go in first gear. I'm such a newbie with the manual stuff, also just wanted to know if its healthy to give it too much gas with a little burnout start? hehe i'm having fun with this lil beast

It's been said a million times, but 45mph is too slow for 6th. 6th is nearly worthless below 70mph to me.

To downshift from 6th to 3rd, I engage the clutch, rev the engine while in neutral up to the (nearly...) matching rpm, throw it in 3rd, disengage the clutch slowly, and hammer it when the clutch is disengaged completely.

My opinion is that with a modern 6-speed, double clutching doesn't inherently help the synocros (they are spinning anyway), but it DOES give the driver more time to match revs better.

hmm, 45-50 mph is the slowest I go in 6th, but if its just me in the car, flat road, and crusing, not too hot, i don't see the problem. The engine seems to be happy at about 1100 rpms, and my foot is barely touching the gas to keep cruising.. I kinda doubt I"m lugging the engine cause by the exhaust note, it doesn't soudn like i"m loading the engine that much.. Its all dependent on conditions.. Up high elevation uphill on mountains, I shift down to at least 5th goign 75+ mph, because it struggling to keep speed in 6th..

Bottom line, do whatever your comfotable with.

I know its been said a thousand times, but it is bad to go 40 45 in sixth. When your
in a lower gear, all it does is waste a little more gas. I usually drive in a lower gear and I really don't notice any difference at all in gas. And besides, I like to get through traffic and if I decide to punch it, I want to get there fast. I make fun of people that drive in a high gear. 6th gear in my opinion is only for highway driving. Those are my 2 cents.

I went out and tryed this 40 - 45 **** in 6th gear.. its felt sooooo terible that i just down shifted it doen to 4th and it felt really good at that gear, it feels like the car is gonna explode when i drive it at 6 gear at 45, just drive ur car like a regular 4 speed manual, 5th and 6th are more for larger highways anyways, in town just stick to the lower gears.
