Like the subject says...
I would like to know what kind of gains to expect since the older cam is quite a bit more aggressive than the newer "truck" cam.

agreed, its not that much more agressive. for the trouble I would spend the money to buy an LS6 cam at the LEAST. I wouldnt even do that peronaly, Id go with a Comp cam, a small one if you are worried about the idle/drivability/emissions

I thought the 01 02 cam were more agressive than the 99 00 cams...I thought that was partly what attributed to the 01 and 02's being faster? Also thought gave em more low end grunt like the lt1's.

No, they have more "low end grunt" because they have the "truck cam" with less duration and lower lift. They also have the LS6 intake and better exhaust manifolds.

Maybe I'm confused here... a friend of mine has a 98 ws6. With ZERO mods he ran 13.5@103 pretty consistantly. He bolted on an LS6 intake and now runs 13.3@106 consistantly. If he improves .2 and 3 mph with that swap, shouldn't I get similar gains by swapping to the old cam? (Since that is the only major difference between the two engines.) The reason I'm asking about this is that I can get a 99 stock cam for $40. Anyone who's actually done this, info is appreciated.

Definately a bit confusing. I'll say this, there is no-way in hades the newer 01-02 exhaust manifolds are better than the 98-99, shorty header style manifolds. The newer ones are like the crappy LT1 cast manifolds, it is also the reason why the 01-02s get such good results from headers, because the stock cast manifolds flow like crap. 98-99s don't respond as well to that mod because they alreay flow very good and don't have the LS6 intake. Putting the LS6 intake on a 99 is a great mod, should be good for 20+ hp, as shown by your buddy's 3 mph improvement and .2 sec in the quarter. On average, a .1 sec decrease in time for a 1/4 mile is equivalent to a 10hp gain, also 1mph is also relative to a 10hp gain so it looks as though your buddy is right in the middle, around 25hp, approximately. I htink your logic makes sense, you'll get again by doing the 99 cam, but what everyone is tryin to tell you is if your going to put all that effort into the cam swap why not pay the money for a cam that will really make a difference.
