Anyone running a Whisper lid beware!

Anyone running a Whisper lid should check it to see if your engine is pulling unfiltered air.

I have been running my Whisper lid on my car almost since the car was new and just found it to be defective. I have been sucking in unfiltered air into my engine all this time.

Take a look at these pics:
http://www.mustangmods.com/publish/8850\/Whisper2.JPG
http://www.mustangmods.com/publish/8850\/Whisper3.JPG

The first shows how my Fram filter falls off the inner sealing surface. This surface is part of the neck. The second pic is a view looking into the neck via mirror which shows the filter sealing surface not in contact with the lid. The filter and lid in both of these pics is mounted on the factory base, clamped properly and off the car.

I sent Barry at Whisper these pics showing how I believed my lid to be defective. I asked if he would replace my lid. He asked me if I "really expected him to warrant the lid after this long". Well, if I have a lid manufactured with a defect regardless of how long I've had it I certainly would expect some help. In fact, if I have an abnormal amount of wear to my engine resulting from his defective lid then maybe even more restitution might be in order.

Fortunately for me I only have 12K miles on my car so hopefully I don't have any damage to valves or valve seats resultant from his lid.

Check your lids guys!

i wouldnt worry about it man. nor would i mention the "wear on my motor" to him. he will most likley just laugh at you.

thats such a small crack anyway why not switch to a different filter?

most dirt that gets sucked in gets burnt up in the combustion chamber.

You're not the first I have heard who has been having problems with the whisper lids. I know a couple of people who's lids won't stay clamped down with the factory clasps. After a few miles of driving the clasps have come loose and it is sucking unfiltered air. I have a MTI lid with a K&N filter on mine. It fits perfect!

Sorry but I don't want any sand or dirt entering my engine just because a manufacturer didn't make his lid properly. How much sand and dirt can an engine digest before it has damage? Maybe we can remove our filter altogether?

I don't think the problem is the filter as my Fram filter fits my factory lid perfectly. I have two Fram filters that don't fit this Whisper lid.

Even if you were to get money from them, you would first have to PROVe that it was the lid that caused the engine damage.

No i meant try switching to a KN or Holley. i jsut got the Holley last week, people said it fit better than the KN.

Good luck.

Does the K & N or Holley have a sealing lip?

Whisper should have either supplied a correct fitting filter or told us in instructions which filter to use if some would not work. They did not! I should be able to use any properly manufactured filter on the market in this lid and expect it to fit properly.

I dont know about the K&N. but next time i have a chance ill look at my Holley.

BTW i have a 94 camaro also with the RANDOM TECH ram air.

they include a new air box that looks just like the factory LT1 air box.

they drill a quarter size hole on the back side of box after the filter for you if you want to relocate your Air temp sens.

i never did it, and ive left the quarter size hole open for about 3 years now. i havent had any problems with it.

Anything small enough to make its way in there is going to get burnt up. All I know is if you would've pulled the "wear on my motor" thing, I would have laughed at you and hung up.

My whisper did the same thing. Any time I reved it the vacuum popped the clips. I just put 2 screws next to the clips, I need a screw driver to check my filter but I have no possible particles entering

I bet you are so smart you save money on air filters and don't even run a filter at all.

Unfortunately a lot of businesses think like you do, just hang up on your customer if they have a problem with a product.

Lids improve hp. Filters have not been found to improve hp.

I actually removed the wire cover backing on my Fram which may be the reason I showed no increase in hp with my modified Fram verses a K & N. I later sold the K & N because the cleaning kit cost more than a new Fram filter.

Thanks again!

I have a stock rear end with a 3.23 gear. I pulled a 1.589 60' just last night.

I also ran a new best of 11.625 @ 115.30 mph with my factory modified lid! I won't use this Whisper anymore on the street.
